I'd much rather have Lake over Sweeney. Sweeney's only appeal was his ability to play CF and with Fowler and Alcantara, there is no longer a need for that.

What is Lake's appeal?

He's completely changed his stance at the plate and has been a walk machine in winter ball. I'm not convinced it's going to have any real effect on his MLB performance since he's still striking out a ton, but it changes the possibility of him being more than worthless to non-zero.

He's definitely been working on his approach, but it has also resulted in an enormous strikeout rate.

He's striking out enough it deserved to be said twice!

(or I whiffed on reading skills)

He went way past what I said to normalize Fowler's performance against center fielders as a whole, I just made a quick comparison to an elite defensive CF(by UZR/DRS) to highlight the UZR/Inside Edge discrepancy.

Loved that article on Fowler's defense.

When thinking about the trade of Luis Valbuena, this is actually the prime time for the FO to make that deal if they were planning on the possibility of Bryant at 3B. I think it is fair to say that Valbuena is a solid player, and proved that with increased playing time in 2014. Where would he fit in 2015? With decreased opportunities, would his production/value fall off?

With the good depth on the IF, and the need for someone with the qualities of Fowler - I say this was a good trade. Definitely solidifies this team.

as either a utility player or super-utility player

I'm not worried about Fowler being a butcher in CF, just worried that his limitations will be highlighted playing next to Coughlan. Thankfully, Baez, Soler and Bryant are going to be offensive monsters, and we'll be able to defensively substitute Denorfia in for Coughlan sitting on a huge lead by the 7th inning most games

I really like this Tommy Cook guy. He's also the one who wrote the entry about "overpaying" in free agency back when we were pursuing Lester.

Yeah, he's a great follow on Twitter.

Fowler sounds like a pretty fun upbeat guy.

I debated starting a Dexter Fowler thread but that would piss off mojo

Very early for this obviously (then again, when you see who is at the top and who is at the bottom, maybe there's something to it lol) but Fowler is grading out pretty decently early on in the field
