Guys like Kevin Brown, Kenny Lofton, Bernie Williams, and David Wells have all come under the 5% threshold in their first (or second, in Williams' case) shot on the ballot.

Kevin Brown was the weird one for me. He's Curt Schilling minus the bloody sock.

Brown had a 5 year stretch (96-00) where he won 82 games with a 164 ERA+, 2.51 ERA, and 1.051 WHIP. Pretty sure that is better than any stretch Schilling had.

Brown was [expletive] awesome; he was a beast for a good decade out of his career.

There were interesting cases for Carlos Delgado and Brian Giles (not that I thought either should get in). It's a shame we are wasting our time debating sure fire hall of famers and whether they're connected to a PED "controversy" that only writers give two [expletive] about, instead of actually debating the cases of marginal guys.

I'd much rather be reading articles about their candidacy than whether some schmuck thinks Bagwell juiced, or how they wont vote for Bonds and Clemens just yet, since they haven't suffered enough.

Complete crap.

My only quibble is with the bold - unfortunately I don't think it's just writers. I know many a garden variety baseball fan who honestly thinks Bonds should not be in the HOF because "he's a dirty cheater." Mostly older fans though, I think.

Crasnick did an informal poll on twitter the other day about whether Bonds and Clemens should be in the Hall. He didn't tally it exactly, but it looked to be north of 80% yes from the fans. Less than 40% of the writers. So while maybe some few fans do care about it, by and large the whole "controversy" only exists in the heads of the writers.

As much of a fan of baseball as I am, the HoF means almost nothing to be me. I have zero interest in ever visiting. It's a complete failure in the only task it has, naming/honoring the best baseball players from their respective generations.

This goes for all the various sports Hall of Fame's for me. I mean, some HoF's probably have done better than others, but my interest is nil, nonetheless.

I don't know, I think the baseball hall of fame seems cool

It is very cool.

A complete failure? That seems a bit much.

I don't have much interest in going, but I'm sure there's a lot of cool stuff to see that has nothing to do with naming/honoring the best baseball players from their respective generations.

Yeah, it's a cool as [expletive] baseball museum. The voting selection is dumb as hell, but people choosing to not go there because of it? That's ridiculous.

Didn't realize it until it was pointed out here. He and Schilling have basically the same numbers. Smoltz, too, besides the saves part, which many think put him ahead of Schilling.

Unit looks like a goober on his plaque. Never saw him smile in a uniform in real life and by god I don't want to see him smiling on his plaque.

Funny you mention that, someone sent me this gif yesterday, which caused me to send back the Randy Johnson/exploding bird gif....

David---Cooperstown is a very cool experience and probably the BEST of all the HOF. I was there for Ryno's induction and it was quite memorable. Sad Pete Rose hunkers down in a store and signs autographs. I hope that's the closest he gets to the Hall. I'm still waiting for Gil Hodges and Lee Smith to go in.

Huh. That actually seems like the opposite of sad for me.

'Sad' because he was a great player and if not for his gambling would be in the Hall.
