Losing out on Knighton and Suh and ditching Marshall = one of the most disappointing offseason since Jaurons (sp?) days.

Thanks! I mean, they played together, so let's not re-live that rather unique moment! Sarcasm is not appropriate in this situation!

"Losing" on free agency isn't really a big deal. The Bears have made loads of big splashes with veterans over the past 10-15 years and it hasn't amounted to a whole hell of a lot.

Seriously. If Pace is doing his job right we will be hitting on draft picks and using FA to fill holes and depth. Cap space is spent resigning your core.

Besides Jeffrey, who should we be looking to re-up to long-term and expensive deals over the next two years? Fuller maybe, but we don't know that yet. Long probably. Forte will be a UFA after this coming season, but at age

30 and with his mileage, are you planning on giving him another long-term deal? Unlikely.

I agree we should ultimately "build through the draft", but if you can fill several of your "needs" with competent FA's you are in a better spot to go pick the best players available when its your turn to pick. This beats reaching for guys because someone has to play.

And its way too early to fret about missed free agents like you've done.

Assuming, McPhee, Rolle and Royal become official tomorrow. The Bears still have a bunch of holes to fill. Obviously, there's the draft. But by my count they still need:

NT (starter quality)

ILB (starter quality, maybe a backup depending on where Jones plays)

DE (backup to Houston, Ratliff)

WR (starter quality, neither Royal or Wilson are #2s)

CB (starter quality, or at least a very good nickel)

S (potential starter, Mundy still sucks, Vereen only other S on roster)

OT (starter quality)

OC (starter quality, or potential starter at worst)

And the Bears have been looking at #2 TEs, and hopefully another OLB at #7.

They have been tied to ILBs (Mason Foster), NTs (Knighton, Dan Williams), and I think those are the priorities. I don't think they can afford a top CB anymore. Maybe they can find a FA at one of those OL spots.

That leaves OLB, WR, CB and either OL or S as the top 4 picks.

No, its not, assuming the goal is to compete with GB and Detroit next season.

They've already committed a pretty large contract to one of the youngest, brightest looking FA. They may still be in on one other big money FA (Knighton) and frankly if they land him, the rest of FA has to be smaller to mid range, less sexy signing anyways - of which there are still plenty of names available. A few already have had visits and there's rumors connecting us to others.

Man, I really really don't want Kap. The guy is a first class douche. The only thing going for him is that he does seem to own Green Bay.

Cutler is a 'first class douche.' I'd think Kaep is more of a 'second class douche.' #progress

Cutler is not a douche at all, anti-vaxxer wife aside. He's a [expletive] bad ass. Kaepernick is, in fact, a douche, however.

jay himself is an anti-vaxxer. they're his kids too.

so he can't disagree with something (not saying he does - we don't really know how he feels about it) while still letting his wife make a choice she (stupidly) feels strongly about?

if jay took the kids to the doctor and got them shots anyway is kristin no longer an anti-vaxxer?

so your argument is that jay's kids not being vaccinated might be due to his indifference, and that's somehow better than being a dumbass who got tricked into thinking it might cause autism? kristin cavallari might be an idiot, but at least people like her think they're looking out for their kids when they decline vaccination. if jay disagrees with her and knows he's putting his kids at risk, but still goes along with it, then he's just kind of a bad person.

i'm not just picking on your specific post. i see the "it's his wife who is anti-vaccination, not him" thing a lot, and it seems dumb as hell to me. who cares about the semantics and which person is the driving force? all that matters is that his kid's aren't vaccinated, and he's responsible.

As Raw very succinctly noted above, we have a ton of needs. I agree that the "sexiness" of the signings is less important than fit and ability. That said, Rolle was clearly a back-up plan (Searcy was the primary target), Knighton is hardly a sure thing as I write this, and we still need help at LB, CB and S (more than just Rolle, assuming he signs)...and that's just on defense.

My point is that by addressing these issues through FA you free yourself up to get a true impact player at 7 rather than taking the risk of reaching based on need. Want to catch up with GB? Sign solid contributors through FA and make a splash in the draft by getting Cooper or White and daring the rest of the league to single-cover them or Jeffrey for the next 5 years.

Yea but on day two of FA, we are not behind the ball on these upgrades. We still have time to make it happen and a few misses like Searcy don't don't significantly impact that overall goal.

I see some reports that S Ron Parker is planning to visit the Chicago Bears tonight. I also hear the Giants are still in the mix for him.

Fox on McPhee: He's has length. Plays with good body lean. Not a speed rusher but a good rusher.
