Lester to Boston rumors seems like agent jockeying to me, more than anything

in the spring they offered him 4/70 and he swiftly gave that the Mutombo treatment...what's changed in the ensuing 8 months to cause them to presumably double their offer? it doesn't make much sense

Why doesn't that make sense?

Indications are things could come together quickly with Sandoval and the #redsox are a very serious player.

Hearing Pablo Sandoval has discussed deals in the 5-year, $80-90 million range with #sfgiants and #redsox.

I can't decide if it's good or bad re: Lester if they sign Sandoval.

Either good in that they have less money to spend or bad in that it makes them even more serious about contention.

i think they'll make a big play for Hamels instead; they've got like 10 MLB-ready arms and nothing to do with half of them except let them blow out their arms and lose all value in AAA

What would a Miguel Montero to the Cubs deal look like?

Jeff Sullivan: If you believe in Montero's Steamer projection, an Albert Almora request wouldn't be unreasonable. If you don't, you adjust downward, and things drop off pretty quick. Could be a difficult situation where the Diamondbacks believe more in Montero's upside than other teams do

For reference, Montero's Steamer projection is .252/.338/.391 in 130 games, 3.1 fWAR

.@WhiteSox, LHP @zach_duke agree to three-year, $15 million contract. #HotStove

Seems like a lot for a LOOGY, who really isn't a LOOGY. This should make Andrew Miller quite happy

Why don't we just cut Almora and at least save some money in the process. Giving up real prospects for Montero would just be awful.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Marlins have "shown aggressive interest" in Adam LaRoche.

The Marlins are about to officially sign Giancarlo Stanton to a record deal, but they backloaded the contract so that they'd have a chance to add more pieces. LaRoche is apparently at or near the top of their wish list. He'd be an upgrade at first base over Garrett Jones after batting .259/.362/.455 with 26 homers and 92 RBI for the Nationals in 2014.

The Marlins are going to have a higher payroll this year than the Cubs aren't they?

I am so thrilled to be joining the @whitesox family! This team has some elite young talent! Can't wait to get started!

Would be cool to think Duke got some bad info about which Chicago team he was signing with.

We got outspent by the Brewers last year. There's not much shame left.

Just this year, then next year after they don't make the playoffs they'll trade everyone and Stanton will be all like "Fool me once..." while he wipes his ass with hundreds.

I suppose I should change the avatar now.

Didn't even realize LaRoche is a free agent.

Hopefully Rizzo can be him one day.

Steamer's projection is very generous for a catcher who turns 32 next season and hasn't put up those numbers in the previous two seasons. All signs point to decline...

There's no way the Cubs offer anything close to Almora for Montero and the 40mil he's got left on the remaining 3 years of his contract.

When adding/subtracting in-season transactions, I believe we were outspent by the Royals, Twins, and A's as well.

In regards to the talk of the D-Backs payroll this year:

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks are interested in James Shields.

The D'Backs tried to trade for Shields when he was with the Rays and apparently are still enamored with him. However, Rosenthal notes that they might have to clear some payroll first in order to sign the veteran right-hander. Chief baseball officer Tony La Russa has noted that Arizona's payroll will be in the $80-110 million range, and they're already at around $90 million when you factor in projected raises in arbitration. Shields has a shot to get a $100 million contract.

#Cardinals have joined the Red Sox, Cubs and Braves in pursuit of Jon Lester according to a club source which makes sense after Miller trade

I swear to god if the Cubs lose out on Lester to the [expletive] Cardinals I will lose my [expletive] mind.

Jokes on them. We could get like Brett Anderson or something.
