Well, that's a hilariously convenient way of looking at things.

"If you ignore the ways they're different, they're practically the same!"

The convenient part is the "hey, there's a difference, so obviously there's no way they could possibly be considered comparable."

Lots of differences.

They were both the top farm system in the game. That's the important part, the rest is details.

This is beyond dumb.

denying cruz's standing in that tier, btw, is history that needed to be revised because the age thing was huge. including him is kind of silly (though i guess if you want to be a big jerk you can say the same concern exists for soler or something).

on that note, i've spent enough time on this. gonna watch better call saul and go to sleep.

If we get to re-write prospect ratings for hindsight, let's wait until this group has played through at least a few years before we make any sort of comparisons at all.

The guy wasn't actually the age he was reported to be by 2 years FFS. That's a huge deal and kind of an exceptional case.

and NOW i'm really out.

That news broke in Jan. 2002, before the list.

Here's the actual blurb from the 2002 list on Cruz:

"6 Juan Cruz, rhp, Cubs

So he's two years older than previously thought. So what? Has tremendous stuff and showed the moxie to pitch well in a pennant race in first taste of the majors. ETA: 2002"

Then we get to count Choi having massive head trauma and being broken into his ranking. And Soler is twice as good at twice as tough a position.

Why is anyone responding to Kyle lmao. just go google a picture of him and laugh and realize that every aspect of his life is forgettable and that's why he's here, to escape that reality

That's why they respond. It's like throwing a bum a quarter.

Just a regular bum. Not Da Bum. He doesn't need your quarters with all that sweet oil patch money.

Here, I'll save people some trouble googling. This is the one I use on dating sites:

There is anger among the teams that Major League Baseball permitted Max Scherzer's deal to have such a high percentage of deferred money.

Would it be different if Selig were in charge? Maybe it's just Manfred making his mark.

more proof of lazy/shoddy prospect evaluation back then. point for me.

Surprised all this mention of the '02 class and no mention of Zambrano.

Having the top class doesn't guarantee anything, it just helps. There is a difference, every athlete is different, new development system compared to Hendry/Stockstill, Maddon compared to Baker, etc. (I believe Oneri had the smaller yet more successful Latin scout).

It's more difficult now to build up top farm systems now compared to 15 years ago.

The Cubs had the best farm system then went on to have successful seasons in 2003, 2004 (mostly), 2006 and 2007. Some parts of that farm were turned into assets like Derek Lee. Secondary guys like Farnsworth became key contributors.

That system was also relied heavily on pitchers, which are inherently unreliable. The system now relies on bats, which is as it should be.

i cringe as i say it but if i could do 2001 all over again i still take prior over teix

(but i agree with you)

Yeah, it wasn't a total wash.

But I think we'd all be pretty disappointed if all we got out of all this hype was 3 playoff years, two of which were only tangentially connected to all these prospects.

High-strikeout bats.

still better than counting on high strikeout young arms

Baez and Bryant - yes.

Soler, Russell, Schwarber, Almora, Vogelbach, Torres - no
