Dayan Viciedo DFA'd

Young. Cuban. Power.

Does he play anything resembling serviceable defense at 3rd? Could be a bridge to Bryant, and then share left with Coghlan.

No. Have that thought exit your mind immediately.

The White Sox DFA'd him to make room for Gordon Beckham, that says enough right there.

HE'S BACK.

Red Sox signed 1B Bryan LaHair to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

LaHair, 32, spent last season between Double- and Triple-A with the Indians, batting just .223/.309/.318 with five homers over 111 games. The former All-Star is merely organizational depth.

The former All-Star...

This fact is still unbelievable.

That three weeks in 2012 was glorious. How it influenced perception for rest of the year was confusing.

Everyday that passes and Shields is still out there I am more and more wanting us to swoop in and sign him to a 3 year deal. Even if the AAV is ridiculous.

That's how I feel too, though I know it's an impossible dream. Just give him 30 mil a year, who cares when the damn thing ends in three years.

Yup and maybe defer/stretch out some of the money over a longer period than the 3 years (like Scherzer). Like sign him to 3/75, pay him ~$20mil a year for 3 years and then ~$3 million a year for the next 5.

I agree, just start throwing offers out there and seeing what happens.

At this point, he's not getting a 5 yr 115 mil deal.

Lower the years, maybe even an overpriced 2 yr deal with a player option.

From MLBTR:James Shields, the top free agent still available, has lost his leverage and is in the worst possible spot as most teams have exhausted their payroll space and are more willing to identify reasons to dismiss an available player, opines ESPN’s Buster Olney in an Insider piece (subscription required). The longer a premium free agent like Shields remains unsigned, Olney notes, the more his negotiating strategy and leverage position are picked apart.

Offer him 18/20/22 with a $22 mutual million option and see what happens.

I dont think Shields is in that bad of shape. Teams will start throwing out offers, looking for a bargain, and he'll get bidded right back up again.

Give him the Moncada money for a maximum of 2 years.

I wonder if our Lester frontloading will cost a chance to pick up a bargain Shields.

Maybe the FO ought to talk to Lester about renegotiating his contract. Signing Shields would certainly put us up with the favorites for playoffs in 2015 and probably make us World Series favorites in 2016 & 2017.

Laughter happens.

He's getting at least 4/80 guaranteed.

If he turns it down, we're no worse off than we are now. He might think about joining a team that could be on the verge of appearing in a WS and not having the pressure of being the #1 starter.

I like how you say this like sometimes there are repercussions if a player turns down an offer.
