Reading Arguello? I guess it's a fair deal, but I'm still hopeful we find a better OF than that. I'd rather just trade Castillo for prospects and use our system to find a better bat than that.

That said, we do match up well with them, they're looking for SP as well, Wood kind of makes sense in an expanded deal with them.

I wonder if Wood for Revere is still something that could happen, the more I think on it I think it's a solid fit. It doesn't solve the problem of finding a taker for Castillo, although I guess it loosens the need to get a MLB player for him so there's more potential outcomes.

@Buster_ESPN: Cubs among the teams still looking for help: They are hoping to add outfielder with an ability to play center.

Am I the only one who'd be OK with Ethier, assuming the return is minimal and the Dodgers paid half of his deal or so?

Can he play center?

He DOES sometimes. He's definitely not a defensive whiz out there, but he seemed decent there this past season.

San Diego still has a bunch of guys in their outfield, even after getting rid of Seth Smith. I like Venable.

I still keep thinking that Edwin Jackson for Cameron Maybin (and some cash or prospects on either side to offset the difference) makes too much sense. Especially given some reports today the Padres are looking for an innings eater in the rotation.

If not that, maybe some kind of Wood for Venable trade. A bunch of those NL West teams match up with us.

I don't really understand the Phillies's motivation to get older, more expensive, and less team years of control in seasons they clearly don't care about.

Dunno, I didn't come up with the rumor. Probably because they have alternatives to Revere(and maybe don't like him as an every day player) while they just had to sign Aaron Harang to get to a 5 man man rotation.

Would Castillo to Az for Incarite (sp?) be a good deal for both teams?

From MLBTR:

In addition to pursuing free agent starter James Shields, the Diamondbacks are looking at the trade market for a starter and/or catcher, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports. Arizona would be interested in moving an outfield bat, and at least one club (the Orioles) has inquired on David Peralta and Ender Inciarte.

Is upside on Inciarte something in the .280/.330/.360 range?

Arizona GM Dave Stewart, on James Shields:

"I think James is a throwback guy by the way he goes about his business and the innings he pitches," Stewart said. "I think the fact that Tony (La Russa) is here and that we have more baseball people – he probably sees us as a true baseball team vs. some of the other teams out here that are geared more toward analytics and those type of things.

"Sometimes, there are concessions the player will make to be here. It's the case that he likes what we're doing with our organization from our end, all we can hope is that there will be concessions enough that he can be here."

We really need to make more trades with the Diamondbacks while those two are still employed there.

I can't believe anyone in management in this era - with advanced analytics having been a significant part of the baseball landscape for more than 10 years - would say that publicly, even if he really believes it.

Really take your politics elsewhere.

Stewart also followed that up with this:

Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said Tuesday that he will not make an addition at catcher.

The D-Backs have been mentioned as possibilities for Dioner Navarro of the Blue Jays and Welington Castillo of the Cubs, but barring a change of heart, they are likely to go into the season with a weak combo of Tuffy Gosewisch and Rule 5 pick Oscar Hernandez. Stewart says his stance is based on the development of prospect Peter O'Brien, who was acquired from the Yankees in the Martin Prado deal last year. "I've decided that I'm not going to pursue another catcher," said Stewart. "I talked with my people and my coaching staff. They believe that O'Brien is going to be around sooner than later. If that does happen, there's no need to go out and get another guy." Stewart is expressing a lot of faith in O'Brien, who needs to make improvements behind the plate.

So they plan to go with a mediocre pairing at catcher in order to not block an all-hit, no-field catcher.
