Hearing #Nats RHP Stephen Strasburg is very much available and both sides believe it is time to move on. #MLB

Could a deal like that even get done with Javy as lead chip? A move like that leaves the Cubs one bat away from being a legitimate WS contender.

Seems highly, highly unlikely Javy could be the lead piece in a move like that. That conversation probably starts with Addison Russell.

Yeah, if you can get a contract extension for Strasburg, you have to really consider that.

I hate saying it, but I don't think our FO would entertain moving Russell in a Strasburg deal. Thinking that our window is just opening, longterm still means more than next 2 seasons. Especially with counting on the rookies and all. They'll have their opportunity on Strasburg in 2 years. Boras is his agent, he's not signing before then.

If Javy could somehow be the lead piece, it's probably a different story. But I doubt he'd fit that bill currently.

There is not a pitcher in the world I'd trade any of Soler, Russell, or Bryant for. That may make me a crazy person but I will live and die on that 'screw pitchers' wall.

Wouldn't the Nats be looking for MLB players instead of prospects for Strausburg, considering they're fairly clearly going for it right now?

They wouldn't be targeting A ball guys as the meat of the deal, but they very likely would have use for near-ready prospects. They have a full rotation without Strasburg this year, and after this season Zimmermann, Fister, Desmond, and Span are all FAs with not nearly that much waiting to replace them.

The Red Sox make a lot of sense here, as they have so much MLB-ready depth and still no real headliner to that rotation.

Why not Castro?

If you want to win in 2015, you don't trade Castro. He's a proven MLB player under a team-friendly contract.

Baez/Russell are big question marks to produce at SS.

#Brewers reportedly trade Yovani Gallardo to Texas for RHPs Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan, and SS Luis Sardinas. No announcement from club.

Jed was asked specifically about Washington's pitching earlier today. He paused for a while, before saying he thinks that this is, more or less, what we expect to head to spring training with.

7 years for a 31 year old is just stupid. When will GMs ever learn?

You sure about that least meatbally statement you made before?

Care to retract that statement now that we know that they'll be paying him $15m/year for 14 years?

Does paying more of it later rather than sooner somehow make it worse in your mind?

I don't like paying him that much at all, but I especially don't like paying guys to not play for you

Depending on the interest rate, the club probably saves about $5M on his contract by deferring.

I get that. And I understand that GM's think that they have to make these kinds of deals with declining stars in order to get them to sign, but it doesn't make me like them.

I don't look at this as some big "win" for Boras. I know Scherzer got paid, but it's not a CK type of deal, as some are saying. Especially since Kershaw didn't hit the open market. Not to mention the deferment.

how is Russell a question mark but not Castro, who was close to being the worst player in baseball two years ago?

i like both players, but that logic is pretty silly

because prospects are unknown quantities no matter how good they are and established major leaguers are certainties duh
