cubs are among teams showing interest in stephen drew

hmmm....sending a message to Starlin or legit worried?

The guy has played in a whopping 374 games in the last 5 seasons. Unless he costs a sack of chipped marbles this seems like a terrible idea.

It doesn't materially change your point, but last 4 seasons. Hard to read between the lines too much, it could be any combination of sending a message to Starlin, worried about Starlin, telling Bryant to get an OF glove, Valbuena trade imminent, Boras trying to drum up an offer that exceeds 'sack of chipped marbles', etc.

Considering Heyman just reported the Cubs among teams in on Scherzer this morning, I'd say that's pretty likely.

Call me crazy but maybe they're worried about our young 2B striking out 60% of the time in winter league and are realizing it would be wise to bring in another option for 2B.

The other thing it could represent is related to Baez. Baez's presence on the roster as a backup SS makes a lot of other roster decisions possible(e.g. having all of Bryant, Valbuena, and La Stella on the roster). If they're pondering Baez in AAA or trading him at all, someone like Drew as a stopgap to Russell's SS ability, even as a backup, would make sense. Doubtful the Cubs can give him enough cash to make a 1 year deal worth it for Drew though, he'll certainly have more of a shot at playing time in another organization.

And Heyman has been Boras's mouthpiece for some time.

I really don't think them talking to Drew has anything more to do with Starlin then when they talked to Zobrist. Javy is the one who needs to be real concerned at this point.

WAR is a weird concoction. How did Martin end up with a 2.8 oWAR after putting up a 689 OPS and 325 OP? Do 30 steals carry that much value?

I'd certainly take Martin if Castillo is the main piece going back. His glove is elite, and he's not terrible offensively, with modest hope to improve with experience. But right now he's a high-K, low BB guy without much power and that's hardly an ideal combo.

Interesting 538 piece on the impact of hot stove activity on the next season's success:

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/baseballs-hot-stove-season-offers-more-sizzle-than-substance/

How insignificant has the offseason been recently? Before the 2014 season, you could have zeroed out the WAR each team received from its hot stove pickups (relative to average), and absolutely nothing about the playoff picture would have changed, in terms of which teams qualified for the postseason. That’s because, under this exercise, the typical team would see a movement of only about plus-or-minus two wins over the entire season if there were no hot stove winners or losers at all.

Rays sign Asdrubal Cabrera. Precursor to a Zobrist trade? I'd love to have Zobrist but I'm worried about the cost considering he's gonna start to show his age and, IIRC, he's a FA after the season.

i really don't think the cost is going to be all that much for the reasons you mentioned

Comment From Danny

What would Zobrist cost in trade?

Jeff Sullivan

Good player, going to cost about $7.5 million. Qualifying offer at the end. If Zobrist is worth something like, I don't know, $30 million based just on his wins contributed, then you're looking at the Rays asking for an upper-level prospect. Obviously not a Kris Bryant level or anything, but Zobrist is going to cost one or two pieces close to big-league ready
