I think you'll find plenty of people here who thought Aramis' age coupled with his injury history vs. the expectations of the FO being able to find at least a capable platoon at 3B would mean the Cubs had a decent shot of at least matching his production for Milwaukee.

The...[expletive]?

I have too much of a headache to go down the gooney wormhole today.

I just remember wanting to let Ramirez walk because I assumed the savings would be spent on other good MLB players.

the 20/20 hindsight comes into play with the knowledge that the front office wasn't going to try to win baseball games when they let him go.

the point was that an established quality hitter was going to be hard to replace when there was nobody in the system that could competently handle the position. It's not really 20/20 to point out they weren't able to fill that hole. I agree that plenty of people on here were more than happy to bid him adieu and let the wonder boys work their magic. But in retrospect that decision was probably the first real clue how deep of a dive they were going to take.

#Tigers have hired Alan Trammell as special assistant to Tigers President, CEO & GM David Dombrowski. Congrats Tram, a HOF person!

11 years after that ugly 2003 season and Trammell still hasn't been back in the (non-interim) manager's chair. Wonder if Dale Sveum will wait as long.

Yes, it's 20/20 hindsight that Aramis' productive 3-year contract at ages 34-36 ended up being exactly the bridge needed to get to Bryant. Go crap in your hat and leave me alone.

I really liked Trammell while he was here and wish he got the managers job over Sveum when it was open.

Valbuena has outproduced Ramirez each of the last 2 years, what in the world are we talking about here

that sweet 7-win difference between Vitters+Stewart and Ramirez in '12 is precisely why we have Kris Bryant right now

This is true. Ah well; I just missed Aramis.

Really kind of sucks that Liriano and Santana got QOs; I thought one of them might be available without the draft pick.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but when exactly do/did the Cubs write the final check to Soriano?

Unless there are deferred payments, they should be done. 8 year contract ended with the final out of the 2014 season.

I'm a little surprised that wasn't more celebrated.

The excitement around the Maddon signing is palpable. While there no real connection between these two things, it really feels like the beginning of something new.

The final check to Soriano didn't have anything to do with anything, so what would there be to celebrate?

Presumably, because he thinks most Cubs fans are really dumb. I'm actually pretty surprised Kaplan didn't have a countdown on his Twitter or something.

Not just this. As I said in my first post, I recognize that it doesn't have anything to do with anything. It does however feel like the end of something. Like the last symbolic remnant of paying for past performance.

Unless they never sign another free agent, they'll always be paying for past performance. Jon Lester, Max Scherzer, whoever else they get on the FA Market could sign a deal every bit as bad as Soriano's ended up being (bad, but not franchise crippling).

What about jaxon? Or the contracts of the managers they fired?

If anything it just reminds one how long ago this team was any good.
