This is [expletive] exciting. Not only because we have one of the top managers in the game now, but having him here with his credibility and track record will lure free agent pitchers & make it a real desirable destination for free agents. Price and Maddon reunion in 2016?? The next 2 off seasons are going to be real fun, folks.

Yeah, in game management and the effect of Ws and Ls is probably what interests me least about Maddon. Mainly I just like poaching one of the key members of Tampa's organization and adding him to the Cubs day to day braintrust. Reading the Extra 2%, their organization certainly wasn't structured like Billy Beane vs. Art Howe. The entire organization was structured so ownership, management, scouts and coaches were all involved and on the same page. I don't think Friedman has any proprietary "special sauce" that Maddon doesn't at least know the reasoning or philosophy behind.

I was digging up some stuff on the Rays pitchers and TJS under Maddon.

One thing that stands out given Andrews' relationship with the Rays — which goes back more than a decade — is how rarely their major leaguers have undergone the procedure. Via the aforementioned BaseballHeatMaps.com data, only one Rays major leaguer has received Tommy John surgery since the beginning of 2007: Jason Isringhausen in 2009. Even that should come with an asterisk, in that Isringhausen was 36 years old at the time and had endured at least six previous arm surgeries, including a 1998 TJ. The only other Rays major leaguer to undergo TJ since the start of 2004 was another reliever with a long injury history, Tyler Walker, in 2006. At that level and across that span, Tampa Bay's total is tied for the fewest among the 30 teams.

Of course Moore had to have TJS earlier this year, showing that no one has competeley solved the puzzle. No approach can undo years of abuse before the kid comes into your organization. I'm surprise Price never had any issues considering the snap he put on that hard curve early in his career.

Rosenthal notes that if MLB can prove the Cubs tampered, the Rays could demand a promising young player in compensation, maybe even a player as talented as Javier Baez or Addison Russell.

There is probably nothing to the tampering allegations, but statements like this are still scary as hell.

Taylor Guerreri, a recent first rounder, had TJS too.

I think you mean hilarious

Basically the only way they have a tampering case is if Renteria hangs them out to dry.

And he won't/shouldn't- as they are paying him the remainder of his deal

With as strategic as Thoyer are...I'm sure they considered the tampering situation and therefore made sure this could be ruled out.

Regarding giving up a top prospect - that's total [expletive], no way they'd be forced to do this. Maddon was making $2M with a chance to make $5M - clearly he's underpaid

Twitter comments are great. One person was complaining that the Cubs didn't interview any minorities before hiring Maddon

Facebook Cubs came close to giving me an aneurysm yesterday.

That Marc Topkins guy from Tampa was on the Score and made it seem like Davey Martinez would join Maddon if he's passed over for the managerial job in Tampa.

i wouldn't say that Maddon will recruit or does recruit, but his presence instantly validates the intent of the Cubs to win, and gives t heir ability to win credibility to big name pitchers.

That'd be great.

Would we have to offer him some sort of "promotion" to get him here since he's under contract in Tampa? Like he'd have to be "President of Bench Operations?" Or can we flat out hire him on for the same position even if he's under contract right now?

I think the assumption is that Tampa Bay would let him out of his contract if he doesn't get the managerial job.
