Lester - Yankees

Maeda - Red Sox

Scherzer - Tigers

Shields - Dodgers

Sadness - Cubs

While most of those are a coin flip; I believe this one is a guarantee.

I bet my buddy $1k that the Cubs will finish over .500 with the stipulation that the Cubs have to sign Lester this offseason, i.e. no bet if Lester signs elsewhere.

Good bet or bad bet?

It's a gamble. I would have made the bet with odds (like you give $750 if the Cubs finish .500 or below, you get $1000 if they finish above). There are too many variables, too many young players who we don't know how long it will take them to adjust to bigs, injuries, the possibility of the Cubs starting off slow and Theo deciding to be sellers at the deadline one more time, etc.

Nope.

And that last part is definitely not happening.

With Lester, I don't think he needs odds on that. I think he probably should give odds, if anything.

Then again, teams never project for more than like 85 wins so what do I know.

The hell are they gonna sell? A reliever?

The fact that they will be relying on multiple players who "haven't done it yet" and that they have to be above .500 to win means no possible way should he be laying odds, with or without Lester.

I still think they could easily be sellers if they have a rough start. These guys aren't going balls out to get to 82 wins. If Arrieta goes down and the team is scuffling, they won't hesitate to ditch a shot at .500 for a shot at a top ten pick. They will get the credibility they want with the Lester signing (reassuring season tickets holders and whoever they sign a tentative TV contract with) and will have much less to lose by losing in August and September.

Hard to say without knowing the progression of prospects and who we sign, but if we aren't good, you could have several contributors dealt(Valbuena, Castillo, some vet OF, Wood if he isn't permanently Jaxon.)

Maybe whatever holdover OF they acquire this offseason, or whatever Jason Hammel type they acquire as well. If they go after a veteran catcher he might not be very useful in 2016.

You think there is no possible way this team projects to be above .500 next year? I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, just trying to understand what you mean by that.

Not that at all.

I think they could easily project to be above .500, but I see no reason to offer odds to some schmoe that the Cubs will finish above .500. If you want to bet with your Cubs fan friend and you need odds on that, you are a dick. You will be able to find a million people to take the other side of that bet. The general population will not be high on the Cubs right now.

Fair enough. I don't see them making many (if any) signings that they don't see as long term pieces and guys they would want on the 2016 team. They've almost said outright that they don't intend to sign the sign and flip types anymore.

Oh, definitely not.

I'm just saying that if either side was a favorite there, I thought it was his side.

Wittenmyer article today with interesting quotes from Jake Peavy. Apparently he and Lester have discussed going somewhere as a package deal, and he doesn't hide his affinity for the Cubs and Chicago.

“It’s hard to have this conversation,” he said. “That being said, obviously Chicago has got a lot of good pieces in place. They’re going to have money to spend. Who doesn’t want to play in the city of Chicago?

Peavy sounding like he's trying to lure the Cubs into a dark alley so he and his meatball friends can kick the [expletive] out of them.

Evidently Lester is meeting with Red Sox and then heading to Chicago to meet with Theo et al next week. Please, God.

Mrs. Lester probably.

Probably doesn't mean much, given free agency has yet to begin, but I am friends with Jon Lester's wife's family. I'm not really wanting to provide "proof," but I worked in Greenville, SC, with the Lester's wife's dad when Lester and the wife met during Lester's rehab.

Anyways, it is my understanding that this is a Yankees/Cubs battle. I recently spoke with the wife's mom and, of all freaking things, she mentioned that the Cubs need to improve their stadium's children's daycare. It's the small things, boys...
