Probably doesn't mean much, given free agency has yet to begin, but I am friends with Jon Lester's wife's family. I'm not really wanting to provide "proof," but I worked in Greenville, SC, with the Lester's wife's dad when Lester and the wife met during Lester's rehab.

Anyways, it is my understanding that this is a Yankees/Cubs battle. I recently spoke with the wife's mom and, of all freaking things, she mentioned that the Cubs need to improve their stadium's children's daycare. It's the small things, boys...

You're right...it doesn't mean much.

I channeled Miss Cleo last night and she said Beth Murphy would be a candidate for any Cubs' daycare plans. $100

I would be floored if the Cubs made a big push on Hamels. They aren't going to trade the prospects required...End of discussion.

They will be heavy on Shields and Lester though. The goal being to get both of them.

I'm coming around a little bit on Shields, but I'm still really wary of his price tag. Brett's bit yesterday put him in the 4/75 to 4/80 range, which with the pick on top is beyond what I'd feel comfortable giving to him.

I keep forgetting about their claim on Hamels and how that's yet another encouraging sign in terms of their willingness to drop coin on pitching.

some quick rosterbation

c - castillo

1b - rizzo

2b - baez

ss - castro

3b - valbuena/russell

lf - coghlan/bryant

cf - alcantara

rf - soler

rotation - lester, arrieta, shields, hendricks, wood/straily/doub/wada?/jaxon?

bullpen - rondon, ramirez, strop, grimm, vizcaino, loogy, long guy

bench - uhh whatever? coghlan and/or valbuena once bryant and later russell come up

division favorites?

obv i wouldn't mind a position player (maybe span or montero like TT talked about) from outside somewhere, but trades are tougher to predict so i just choose not to mess with it and i don't want to spend a whole lot of our funds on martin.

What a 2nd/3rd round pick? Who gives a [expletive].

A top 50 pick isn't something to just throw away(fun fact, #46 is where Gallardo, Rollins, and Rolen were all drafted), most especially in this case when we're talking about paying a 33 year old SP about 10 million more than he's probably worth.

Fraid I've gotta disagree there.

Also does giving the pick up for Lester bother you? He's gonna be 31 and probably require an overpay.

There's no pick to be given up for Lester.

Ohhhh snap you're right. I keep forgetting that for some reason.

That said, I agree. Do. not. care. about giving up that pick for shields.

Giving up a pick in principle does not bother me, it's about the overall value. That pick has value, especially as FA prices continue jumping to 7M+ per win. Everyone has a threshold of comfort somewhere, that projected Shields deal is just across mine, and adding the pick makes it worse. I especially don't like it for guys of Shields' age, position, and lack of elite ceiling too.

To be more clear, I'm not comfortable with giving Shields 4/80 even without the pick. It's just one more thing that tips the scales further in that direction. Plus I think you need to be more diligent in the case of a guy like Shields who has so many risk vectors.
