That was an exceptionally long review and it added four minutes to a three hr game. It's all good, brah.

Exactly. The games are already bloated with dead time. There's no point in adding anymore when you basically gain nothing because most calls are either moot to the outcome or inconclusive on replay or both.

I'm willing to endure the occasional waste of four minutes if it allows for the obviously incorrect call to be overturnable whenever it does occur.

And most of them are closer to 2 and a half minutes as well. And Kyle, I think you're overstating how many replays are truly inconclusive. You said "most" of them. I'd probably say, like, I don't know, 20% of them. There doesn't need to be any massive overhaul to making them quicker outside of the people in NY making the call faster. If we can tell after 2 or 3 looks it's inconclusive, they can too. Also, I don't know why the umps need to run back and forth to headsets and everything. Just have them buzz in the call to someone in the dugout and have them give a right or wrong signal, and resume play asap with everyone already in their correct positions. It takes Joe West about a minute to jog 10 feet.

I'm just thinking of the obvious Armando Galarraga types of situations where even the guy who made the call reviews it afterwards and immediately admits, "yeah, I totally [expletive] that one up." Four minutes seems like a long time when you're just staring at the umps reviewing video, but it really isn't that long considering the alternative.

Compromise:

Reviews can take as long as necessary to be absolutely sure you got it right, but teams only get one challenge per year, not used up if challenge overturns the call.

I'm late here, but I'm in favor of the second WC. Just wish they'd make it best of three.

Oh lord no. Guaranteed elimination games are awesome. Nobody is dying to see the Game 1 of 3 between the Angels and Royals while the whole playoffs get pushed back a week.

Yeah, a best of 3 makes no [expletive] sense. Makes it marginally (and I mean marginally) less of a crapshoot and drags it out and removes the amazigness of single elimination.

How many best-of-three series did the cubs win a single game to start the year? You are giving a greater margin-for-error for the best team to advance.

Is it still a crapshoot? Yeah. Does it make it less likely that it's not a coin toss? Yeah. Marginal or not, it would only "cost" one or two additional days. Not to mention I'd bet that ratings and viewership would be high, regardless.

Exciting and fun factor of a one game playoff >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that very marginal removal of variance

The best team had a chance to advance by winning the division. Nobody cares if the best team advances in the wild-card round.

ban the shift

I was always curious......are there no right-handed hitters whose spray chart warrants an over-shift? It's ALWAYS left handed hitters who get the shift

It's opinion and I realize that. I guess I'm just pessimistically thinking about the scenario when the cubs are the superior team and get screwed out of advancing because of some scrub pitcher having the game of his life. Give them a series to figure it out. But, agree to disagree. I understand both views.

Right. Usually the two teams battling in the wild card round are both marginal and fairly evenly matched anyway, so a one game playoff doesn't let in that much more variance than a three game.

Javy has been getting the shift in this series

The Rays had a shift on Javy in his first AB (camera really didn't show in the others if they continued it) in this game.

And another easy way to shorten the replay time is to simply have one person assigned to watch each game. I don't think they look at things until the manager officially challenges and then things get started in NY. WGN has probably shown the replay four times by the time Renteria slow jogs out and gets the thumbs up or down from the dugout.

The four wild card WS winners since it's implementation in 1994 probably care. Which is pretty statistically appropriate to support the "crapshoot" ideology. All the more reason for a scenario that gives the best chance the best WC team advances.

I realize it's still a crapshoot. I also realize it's a matter of opinion. My opinion is that the WC team has as a chance to win the WS as any other team. Take an extra day or two to allow for the nature of one game anomalies.
