I had no opinion whatsoever on Digger Phelps until today, and now I hate him so much.

God. I've hated him for so, so long.

How many best-of-three series did the cubs win a single game to start the year? You are giving a greater margin-for-error for the best team to advance.

The best team had a chance to advance by winning the division. Nobody cares if the best team advances in the wild-card round.

The four wild card WS winners since it's implementation in 1994 probably care. Which is pretty statistically appropriate to support the "crapshoot" ideology. All the more reason for a scenario that gives the best chance the best WC team advances.

I realize it's still a crapshoot. I also realize it's a matter of opinion. My opinion is that the WC team has as a chance to win the WS as any other team. Take an extra day or two to allow for the nature of one game anomalies.

You are the Digger Phelps of playoff-format opinions.

Thanks. Good talk.

no, the extra wild cards have less of a chance to win the world series, which is a feature, not a bug.

They should have zero chance because they shouldn't be in the playoffs at all.

I love replay discussions because it reminds of the time Kyle said scoring reviews in football bother him because he doesn't know if he can celebrate a touchdown or not and it makes me laugh and laaaaaugh and laaaaaaaaaugh.

Kyle's the Digger Phelps of touchdown celebrations.

You can laugh all you want. It cheapens everything. You can't tell me you don't have that nagging doubt every time there's an awesome play where the guy gets within five feet of the sideline.

99% of the time, no. And if it was in doubt then the review is just part of the awesome excitement/tension of the moment, but otherwise it's almost always a formality and worrying about in any way is hilarious.

Well, you're terrible in other ways.

I'm late here, but I'm in favor of the second WC. Just wish they'd make it best of three.

Nah. The only reason a second WC is tolerable is that teams are usually going to start their #1 SP with no chance to rest him for game 1 of the LDS, giving the team with the best record in the league a deserved advantage beyond home field.

I'd prefer to take the managers out of the replay process and have every play automatically reviewed from the booth. Or at least get rid of the "irrefutable evidence" part of it. Just because the umpire is only 70% sure after the replay doesn't justify letting the call he's now 30% confident about stand. But that's never going to change.

I'm not against the DH, I just like that a pitcher can increase his value by being a good hitter over a slightly better pitcher who goes 4 - 60 and bunts into double plays. But for such a divisive topic, I really couldn't care less. Just make it the same for both leagues.
