I had a long, not-that-funny post comparing all of our top prospects to players from the original Mighty Ducks movie, but I accidentally closed the tab and now it's gone and not worth the effort to reproduce.

So anyway, Javier Baez struck out four times in a row, the Cubs blew the game yesterday and now Edwin Jackson is starting.

Joe Madden is a man after my own heart.

"Totally National League, Oh my God, what a different baseball game. For the group that doesn't sometimes get it when you talk about the game being boring, I think maybe sometimes American League fans need to watch a National League game. Seriously, because there's so much more going on.

"When you manage a game like that, you actually feel as though you've played when it's over. I'm really becoming more of a fan of it. There are so many moving parts."

Ok, Joe, you are the one managing, not the fans. We still have to watch pitchers bat. I'll take the DH, please.

Yup believe it or not there are a lot of people that love the NL style of play. The DH is a joke, the game is suppose to be 9 players fielding and the same 9 fielders batting. AL baseball is an abomination.

having o deal with pitchers hitting may be more fun for managing. it is not more fun for watching.

Then explain to me pinch hitting, relief pitching changes and double switching -- the three main things that make the NL different from the AL, other than having to watch shitty hitters hit when the 9-spot comes around.

The idea that the NL game has a meaningfully different "style" is ridiculous wankery.

Well, there is. During the latter innings of games, NL managers go out of their way to limit the inefficiencies presented to them by having pitchers in the batting order. We spend the last three innings trying to undo what could permanently be undone by installing the DH.

They either pinch-hit or they spend six seconds implementing a double-switch. Not exactly chess.

In the NL, Pitchers take about 1 in every 19 plate appearances. It's an extremely small sacrifice for the huge increase in strategy that comes with it.

The actual impact of said strategy is essentially nil. "OMG, who am I going to use as a pinch-hitter here? Probably the best guy on the bench who isn't a catcher who hits opposite-handed to the pitcher. Doesn't really matter though, because 90% of the PAs are going to end the same away anyway."

I used to be staunchly of the puritan mindset that pitchers need to bat because "that's the way the game was meant to be played." But over the past few years I've come to realize that there's little value in sending guys with a .100 BA to the plate, for the team or for the fans. The game is meant to be fun and pitchers batting is not fun. DH needs to come to the NL, IMO.
