rangers going after him is a move like the cubs would do looking for a long term upgrade not a rental

but i wonder what they give up for him?

I'm not sure what our FO is doing, but I find it very hard to believe we could get a starter of Hamels' caliber in FA without paying 20-25 million.

Yes, Greinke and Price will be FA, but they've gotta be looking at 30+ per season for 6-8 years?

You pay the extra money to keep your farm system in tact. It's a good trade off.

How good of a package would the Cubs have had to put together to match this deal?

I think McKinney, Contreras, Pierce Johnson, and Tseng is a better deal.

Thompson, the only guy ranked, was 49 in BA's midseason top 50.

For reference, Gleyber Torres was 28 and Billy McKinney was 30.

Cubs could have beat this without giving up any core future guys, which is pretty disappointing to me.

I'm sitting here wondering which of these brought about the Rangers getting Hamels with their offer:

1. Were we intentionally low balling the [expletive] out of proposals to the Phillies?

2. Did Theo just not want Hamels that bad?

3. Is Rueben Amaro just a windowlicking moron?

The last two of those are fine with me, but god damn, if that's what Cole Hamels' price tag wound up being we could've blown the Rangers offer out of this planets orbit without even losing anyone that good. I'm one sour apple at the moment.

You're ignoring the "we just don't have any available money" option
