I say yes. So who finishes last? The Cardinals. There's a good chance they finish under .500, and we've got 3 months to close the gap.

Very doable.

I hope not. Nothing good comes from being middle of the pack. If you're gonna be terrible you may as well be a complete dumpster fire and get a super stud in the draft.

arent we already outside of getting a protected pick

No, we're currently 28th. There's about 5 games between 30th and 17th, so worrying about where we are on that line is pretty pointless for probably 2 more months.

why was I thinking it was only 25th-30th? bleh. So the bottom 13 teams get a protected pick?

Only the top 10, I pointed out how close 13 teams were to illustrate the idea that worrying about it right now is futile.

i think we've already had enough years of this

Yeah, I'd like to see some improvement. Most teams don't just go from 65 wins to 90 and the playoffs. Got to take some smaller steps along the way.

I personally wouldn't be mad if we finished 18th instead of 28th, but you can bet this front office will sign Skip Schumaker and Jason Marquis to avoid giving up a draft pick in that scenario.

ETA: So I guess I would be mad?

Oh the places you'll go as a Cubs fan. We're not last! We're not last!
Maybe last, but by far the best last place team in the MLB. I would like to see San Diego or Arizona try to play close to .500 in the NL Central! It's the toughest neighborhood in town. Even teams like Toronto and SF would be battling for 2nd or 3rd place around here.

As far as the draft situation goes, I don't give a rat's ass about it. You know how many #1 picks bust out, and how many 29th's become gold? It's a crap shoot.

You do it with your farm system and key free agent acquisitions. And of course, NOT losing your blue chip players to same.

A) Crap shoot is an overused term that doesn't really do justice to the situation.

B) If you believe you do it from your farm system then you should give more than a rat's ass about the draft situation.

A team has to decide a particular direction to go in and make moves accordingly. The Cubs for the last few DECADES don't seem to have that figured out. But maybe now?

Great drafts, excellent player development and wise FA spending can only keep you a contender for so long.

Well, the pixie dust has worn off a bit and they've stopped hitting better than anyone in the history of ever with RISP, they've got 3 of 6 starters on the shelf right now and a bit of a depleted pen because of some recent short outings by the guys who are healthy, so yeah, you're pretty much right.

It's 4 of 6 sidelined. Lynn will miss a start or two with a nasty blister on the middle finger. Wainwright is operating on cortisone shots in the elbow. That leaves Shelby Miller, the #5 starter as the only completely healthy arm and he is being treated like a rented mule by the hitters. Ain't won a game in a while.

The kid brought up to replace Wacha from AA was rocked for 5 and 4 earned runs in his two starts, ERA over 9.00 (Marco Gonzalez) The bullpen has held the games close but the Cards never win when behind after 6. They are something like 1-28 in that regard.

In short, the season is over for them in regard to having a post season. If we beat 'em when we meet 'em we will catch 'em.

There is value in not finishing last again. Sure, we've built our organization through the draft, I get that. But at a certain point that [expletive] gets old. It has gotten old with our own players who are sick of losing and aren't likely to want to resign with us. It gets old with the fans disguised as empty seats at Wrigley this season. It starts to seem like the same ole loser Cubs with potential free agent signings who don't even have the Cubs on their radar. Say what you will about cliches like "creating a culture of winning" but at some point I'd like to see how some of our guys react to playing meaningful games in at least August. The last couple of late summers have seen all the high leverage moments of spring training games.

I kind of hope they finish last one more year and get the number 1 pick. Then instead of the middle year where they jump to like 74 wins they go out and win like 79 next year and are in the hunt in 2016.

I kind of hope they win 99 games next year.

Wow, slow down with the expectations there...

Yeah, [expletive] that. I want them to win the rest of their games this year and 162 games next year and then forever. If Theo and the boys are worth their salt they will find a way to win when they are picking last every year.

I don't and haven't understood the joy of losing to get high draft picks. It's seems weird to me.

I want my team to win every time they play.
