Ranking our available trade pieces.....

1. Ruggiano- with a year of control left, I'd say he's easily the most valuable guy likely to be moved.

2. Strop- some team control, may be looked at as a set up guy for a few teams.

3. Wright/Russell- figure one is moved, no idea which. Slightly more valuable than Thatcher anyway.

4. Barney-glove

5. Schierholtz- guess he could still move up if he heats up. If not, I figure he's an August waiver claim by someone.

6. Villanueva-waiver claim

7. Bonifacio- total question mark on health

I could see Christian Villanueva being dealt, if so I'd actually place him 3rd or 4th on this list value-wise.

If Valbuena is moved, he'd be 1st on here.

If Edwin were dumped, I'd probably put him 5th on here, as far as return goes.

Travis Wood would be 1st, higher than Valbuena.

% of getting dealt

Russell/Wright-95

Barney-75, other 25 is a DFA

Strop-60

Ruggiano-50(we may want him for next year)

Villanueva-50(25 on a DFA)

Schierholtz-50(more if he produces)

Bonifacio-25(health)

Valbuena-25

Christian Villanueva-10

Jackson-10

Wood-5

Castro or Arrieta-under 1

One of the LHRP is pretty certain to move, and I think Ruggiano will go too - he has some value to a contender, and Theo is likely feeling burned for failing to move Schierholz when he had the chance.

Valbuena is the wild card here. There's no urgency to move him given his salary and team control, but he'd be a classic case of sell high. He is, as Callis said, "playing over his head" - indeed, his BABIP is unsustainable and gravity is beginning to assert itself. His versatility makes him quite desirable for a contender, especially one that isn't a mega-payroll team - I could easily see the Cubs moving him.

if someone gave us something similar in value to corey black for valbuena I'd probably take it

I wouldn't. I want someone who slots into an ordinary team's top-10, so our top 20.

This guy has been an above-average MLBer for three years now and he's under cost control for awhile yet.

i would bet corey black is in the back-end of most people on this board's top 20

I would bet he doesn't make the cut on most.

Here's a 20 that was posted in the minor league forum today:

Bryant, Baez, Soler, Tseng, Almora, Vizcaino, Edwards, Rivero, Vogelbach, Bruno, Russell, Alcantara, Schwarber, Torres, McKinney, Johnson, Hendricks, Stinnett, Jimenez, Underwood

Who does Black kick out?

how on earth is ruggiano 32? i was going to make a big post about how i like him and want him on the team one way or another next year, but that was a lot more enticing when i thought he was like 27.

Corey Black is definitely in my Cubs top 20, but that's not nearly enough to get Valbuena, in my opinion. His versatility means a lot to us next year. If I'm trading our own minor leaguers for him, as an example-it'd take Blackburn and Vogelbach. 2 guys that would likely be in most teams 6-10 range.

I'd want something fairly close to that for Ruggiano too, for the same reason. We just don't have to move either and both could easily fill holes for us until youngsters take over.

He's ahead of Bruno and Underwood for me.

Bruno is in somebody's top 10?

The odds of them actually getting a return valuable enough to justify moving Valbuena are pretty damn slim.

This is exactly why I'd shy away from moving them unless you get a ridiculous offer from somebody. You know you're not going to see Baez or Bryant in Chicago on opening day and to keep from having yet another disaster of a start, you've got to have some respectable bodies to throw out there until they are brought up. Ruggiano less so than Luis, but that's contingent on signing at least one actual ML OF in the off season.

I'm guessing those 20 aren't in order.

Someone split our farm system into two Top 10's in the MiLB forums, it was just copy and pasted

Hey that was me!

Yeah, if I'm the Cubs, I'm done trading for the most part unless someone wants Schierholz, RP- Russell, or Barney. I don't think there's anyone else on the roster who I'd be willing to trade that's even worth trading.

I'd definitely like to trade James Russell.

Think he'd bring back much? It's not going to be anywhere near a Sean Marshall return.

Nowhere near that. I just feel like his replacement at AAA is better.
