The Rest of the team Trade Thread

We know Shark and Hammel are the two main pieces that'll be talked about, but who else could go? And could anyone else bring a good return?(that's realistic to be dealt)

Position Players- Valbuena, Barney, Schierholtz

Don't see anyone else being a realistic target. Barney surely brings nothing back. If Schierholtz has a good June/July, he could still net us something decent. Especially with the lack of bats being available supposedly.

Valbuena is a true wild card for me. I have no clue what he'd bring back. But it'd better be something very, very solid. He's just a damn good player. Is it unreasonable to think he'd bring back a top 100 guy? Hell, is it enough? I just have no idea on him.

The Rotation- Not counting Shark and Hammel, I guess a team could come in and take Edwin's contract off our books, without giving us much of a return. Very doubtful though, in my opinion. Wood? Wrong time to deal him, he's more valuable to us than other teams most likely. Arrieta is going no where either.

The Pen- Veras made his exit. I kind of suspect Villanueva to follow suit, doubt he's tradable. Russell and/or Wright? I could see one dealt, in fact I expect it. The return? Not awe inspiring obviously, but maybe a couple of top 30 system types? Could Parker come up and pitch decently, to get moved? If Morris can be dealt for something of value, I guess it's possible. Only other option is Rondon, who'd bring a very nice return, but I can't see it.

Thoughts?

I'd place a significant wager on Christian Villanueva being moved before 2015 opening day. As far as Valbuena goes, we'd never get equivalent value back. He's on pace to put up nearly 3.5fWAR and he's doing it on the cheap. I'd want the kind of prospect no one would give back for him. Someone like Jorge Alfaro or Rubby De La Rosa.

the Cubs are on their way to winning 5 of 7 this week and getting near the second wild card. Ten days from now the conversation is going to turn to whether we should bring up Bryant to help with the second half charge to the playoffs.

In rough order of likelihood:

Schierholtz - He's started hitting after a horrific start(.750 OPS the last month), there's options for his PAs(especially when Sweeney returns), and there's zero chance he's back next year.

Russell & Barney - non-tender candidates who have young guys who probably should be taking their playing time. Both bounced back from bad starts and a contender might take a flyer on them as stretch-run depth, especially since there's an extra year of team control if they want it.

Bonifacio - Unlikely they trade Schierholtz, Barney, and Bonifacio and Emilio has not been good after a great April, but he has positional flexibility and a specific skillset that could play on a postseason roster.

Villanueva - With how marginalized he's become I imagine the FO would jump at the opportunity to get any type of player in return or get out of any part of his salary. Rusin could be a garbage man in his stead if they're committed to that role keeping pressure off the young arms in the pen.

Wright - Unlikely they trade Russell and Wright, and there's no immediate need to trade Wright, who's been effective and is controlled thru next year. If some team really wants a LHRP or specifically him though, I'd bet they would part with Wright at a decent price.

If they trade Valbuena we riot.

Pure surplus value-wise, Valbuena should get back a high end pitching prospect or a middle of the top 100 hitting prospect. Maybe Sims and Bethancourt from Atlanta? Likely not since their system is so bare otherwise, but in that arena.

'd move Jackson, but hopefully to absorb salary for a better player return.

Valbuena: I can't imagine anybody giving up enough for him worth a guy under control until 2017 who would be at worst, a super sub.

Beyond that, I suppose Schierholtz, Barney, Ruggiano, Bonifacio, Wright, and Villanueva are all guys who I could see Epstein moving in a few of his patented spinning straw into silver, or at least younger, more exciting straw trades.

With Sweeney coming back soon, it wouldn't surprise me if Coghlan was dealt. Not that the return for him alone would be all that much.

I really can't imagine it being anything actually.

He might want to renew that patent again.

But it's true. Those with even a slight understanding of how minor league ball works know otherwise. But to the majority of fans, all they see is stats, and thus are going to start clamoring for this beast to come up and immediately begin terrorizing big league pitchers as he has AA.

These same fans don't think in terms of a lost season well before the all star break. They have no concept of an arbitration clock. They're more interested in some miracle playoff run than what happens beyond 2014, and continue to be until that E# hits 0. In a sense, I envy their mindset.

@jonmorosi Sources: Cubs telling teams they are willing to listen to offers for starting pitchers Samardzija, Hammel, E. Jackson and Arrieta.

@jonmorosi Cubs not planning to *trade* all 4, but they want to see what market values are for each and then decide on course. Due diligence.

There's no way anyone would give enough.

Admittedly I haven't been keeping up with Arrieta. Nice to see we have an ace in the back of the rotation.
