It just doesn't seem right to me when players are charged with an out when they don't make an out. Life's not fair, I guess.

Would it be fair to the pitcher to charge him with giving up a hit when he didn't?

More fair. It was his team that wasn't able to record an out. Seeing-eye grounders and bloop singles suck for the pitcher, too, but no out is recorded. I don't lose any sleep over this or anything, I just didn't realize till last night that it still counted as a fielder's choice if they don't get an out. Seemed weird to me.

I completely disagree with the idea that it would be "more" fair.

The point is that the result of that pitch/swing/contact combo should result in an out of the batter with normal defensive effort. The lack of an out being recorded does not make a hit.

It doesn't make an out either. So why not count it the same as a sacrifice?

Because the batter isn't sacrificing himself

That's right. What I'm saying is that there's a third way to score things.

Where in the term "fielder's choice" is it stated that an out is a prerequisite? The fielder made a choice to go after another runner. It's as clear as can be. The pitcher didn't give up a hit and the defense didn't make an out.

exactly, hence the word "choice", the fielder simply made a choice to make a different play

lol, this is great

Travis Wood made a beeline for fellow pitcher Jeff Samardzija's locker. He wanted to apologize for all of that run support.

''I instantly came in here and gave him a hug and said sorry,'' the lefty said after [...] a 17-5 rout over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. ''The offense played great, they brought their 'A' game.''

By this logic a player should get a hit when the defense makes an error.

Didn't even come to mind what Samardzija must have been thinking, haha.

My first thought when I saw the final score was, "Jesus Christ, they REALLY are trying to tell Samardzija that they can't afford him."

Calm down, Andy.

I'll repeat what I've said one more time and then move on....

1) I always assumed the defense had to make an out in order for it to be considered a fielder's choice (as in, they made the choice to get another runner out). My thinking was that if they were late getting to said runner, it would be the same as them being late to getting the ball to first.

2) I never said it should necessarily be a hit, just not an out. The same way that a sacrifice doesn't count as a hit or an out.

3) I don't really care. It was just a random thought I had, brought on by the fact that I want Rizzo to end up with an OPS over .900 because that would make my wonderful life slightly more wonderful.

4) Good day.

at the end of the day you are looking to reward a hitter based not on something he did, but on a defensive mistake.

He put the ball in play, didn't he?

We reward hitters for putting the ball in play and getting lucky all the time.

We reward them for putting the ball in play and reaching base despite the best effort and execution of the defender, not defensive mistakes.
