That's about the most perfect scenario we could hope for. Afflalo fits with Rose and Melo so much better than Jimmy does. More likely though, is that they're looking at Afflalo as a plan B if they miss out on Melo.

FWIW, some dude, just yesterday, claiming to have inside information on RealGM said the Bulls were in talks with Orlando on a 3 way with the Knicks in the Melo sign and trade talks...

Adding Afflalo and Melo while subtracting Boozer and Butler certainly makes us better than Indiana and probably better than Miami assuming they return everyone and improve their bench.

 

EDIT: I'm assuming we have to part with Jimmy in order to get AA.

That's a solid team, easily favorites in the East if it happens if not overall favorites. Allows for some good roster flexibility too as you could go small with Rose/Afflalo/Butler/Melo/Noah or big with Rose/Afflalo or Butler/Melo/Taj/Noah

 

Add in 1-2 cheaper/veteran wing players like Vince, CJ Miles, Shawn Marion, Caron Butler, Marvin Williams, Thabo Sefolosha, Danny Granger and 1-2 more of the same for PF/C like Jordan Hill, Okafor, Earl, Clark, Humphries, Jermaine Oneal and you have an incredibly solid, versatile and deep 8-9 man rotation with the above mentioned starting lineups + Hinrich and whichever 1 of Butler/Afflalo/Taj is coming off the bench.

That would be great......

 

...if Melo is OK with his salary starting at about 11.7 million. And us having 6 league minimum guys.

 

Edit: There are probably ways to technically get it done. But not what Simmons proposed (Boozer/Afflalo). And Butler's pretty much going to have to go (not that i'd be opposed to that).

I'm not a cap expert, but yes I believe they'd nave the full MLE and LLE then vet mins to fill out the roster. The MLE should be around $6 mil for them this year, I think. Which is far more than enough for DJ I'd imagine, he probably won't even require all of it or at least shouldn't. If he does might want to look into other guys to use the MLE on.

It doesn't need to be, but to afford him it was one of the easiest ways to get him here without having to get rid of anyone.

If we are signing Melo in that scenario, then we won't have those options since we'd be under the cap. And again, in Simmons' exact scenario:

 

Rose: 18.9 mil

Joakim: 12.2 mil

Taj: 8 mil

Afflalo: 7.5 mil

Buckets: 2 mil

6 cap holds: 3 mil

 

= 51.6 mil

 

Estimated cap = 63.2 mil

 

= 11.6 mill the most you can offer to Melo. With all minimums elsewhere. Best case scenario is he takes 17 mill, but it's probably going to be more.

 

That being said, Boozer S&T for Melo and other people for Afflalo could *probably* theoretically work because we could probably stay over the cap and keep our MLE, etc.

 

Bottom line is the best case scenario for all parties is going to be a Boozer S&T for Melo (regardless of Afflalo). Bulls get to use the MLE, Knicks get a few useful pieces as opposed to nothing, Melo gets paid more.

Nope, we'd have to sign Mirotic from that 11 mill. So we'd probably have a 6 million signing or so left in us after signing Mirotic (obviously dependent on what he signs for).

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. Couldn't remember if the MLE can take you over the cap or not. Guess trying to sweeten the hell out of a Boozer for Melo swap is about our only option, short of using Taj and others for the same thing.
