Only if the black guy makes amends beforehand.

Did people see this idiocy?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-ernie-banks-sammy-sosa-20140430,0,5678646.story

"I had talked to (Cubs Chairman Tom) Ricketts a little bit about it. He said he didn’t know what to do ... whether he was going to have him come back or whether he was not going to have him come back to the (100-year celebration of Wrigley Field)," Banks told the Tribune.

"(Ricketts) said: ‘Well, I’ll let you know.’ Then when we got to the 100th anniversary, I asked everybody out there: ‘Is Sammy coming? Is Sammy coming?' They said: 'We don’t know ... we don’t know?'"

Apparently, the Cubs want Sosa to address the long-standing speculation that he used banned substances while on the way to overtaking Banks as the Cubs’ all-time home run leader. Then, perhaps a reconciliation could be discussed.

Ernie Banks wants to help reconcile Sosa with the Cubs but Ricketts, who can't get anything done on any level to help the organization take a step forward, blows him off.

Hahaha, so typical. Nice work, Poor Tom.

Have any of you heard or care about the things/attitude Sammy has now? The dude is nuts. He calls for his own statue.

I loved him as much as any Cub fan, but I have ZERO problem with him being stiff-armed, until he has a shred of humility and changes his whole personality.

I don't really care that SF has welcomed Bonds back, or that McGwire is now a respected hitting coach and pushing around a crippled Kirk Gibson - Sosa and his ilk are crap. They are terrible role models for our kids, and a disgrace to the game. It was enough for Sandberg to backhand him in his HOF acceptance speech, and any Cub that I respect has little respect for Sosa. Kudos to the Cubs organization for taking out the trash.

I can't believe I'm obviously the only person on 4 pages saying this.

so, why exactly are you against him being welcomed back? i'm just asking because it appears that you can't put your finger on it either.

Why welcome him back? He walked out on his team and organization. For all we know (and we all know he wasn't clean) he is the symbol of what was wrong in the game during the steroid era, shaming himself by acting as if he couldn't speak English.

Sure, he was the "heart and soul" of the Cubs and the only bright spot for so many seasons. I enjoyed the PED Era as much as all of you, but I'm just not ready to let go of my disgust at what was done to MLB. Owners, players, and Selig - all garbage.

Sosa and everyone else did it for the money. They ruined the history of the game, which some of us respect.

Damn, he was fun to watch play, though. I don't care if they "reinstate" him to the inner circle of Cub Glory. I doubt he'd be accepted by that body - but what the hell did they do?

I just like to rant - who gives a f$#% what I think. I still love Sammy, but what the hell is he doing to himself?

For the last [expletive] time. Speaking [expletive] broken English to the media is a hell of a lot different than when you're in front of a Congressional hearing. When legal wording is involved and perjury is a very real outcome, it's in one's best interests to understand what the [expletive] is being said.

Everyone needs to remember that Sammy was a non-American included in that group to appear before that panel.

If English wasn't my first language and I had to go before some kangaroo congressional panel, knowing that my words are going to be dissected ad nausem, I'd bring a [expletive] interpreter too.

What is the significance of him being a non-citizen? Perjury is still a felonious and deportable offense, and Sosa still maintains residences and business interests in the US.

I think the goat farmer is saying he agrees that Sammy, as a non-US born English speaker, was absolutely justified to have an interpreter at that hearing.

Oh he was agreeing with me?

Yes, Sammy was entirely justified in bringing an interpreter to the hearing. Also, congress had never been interested in ped use in sports and has not been since.

Sosa was accused of being a steroids user and for that alone he has been banned by the Cubs, despite the complete lack of evidence against him.

However, Manny Ramirez is a proven drug cheater and yet the Cubs have welcomed him with open arms.

I don't think the Sosa shunning is about PED's, actually though. It sure seems like there's more to it than that.

I said it earlier, but my guess is that since anywhere you'd want Sosa to be is for PR stuff like the 100th birthday game and fluff like that, that they don't want him there when a sizable number of fans are going to still boo him. I don't know if him publicly apologizing would make a huge difference, but that + time has helped in some other cases. Seems more logical to me than the implications of hurt feelings from people who weren't in power with the Cubs when Sosa was around.

I think it's pretty clear that the Cubs keeping this an issue is playing a part of keeping fans on the "no Sammy" side. They are playing up to the meatballs and thus feeding them more red meat, and making things worse. Talking about Sammy needing to do stuff to get back into the good graces of Ricketts & Co is just ridiculous and not the least bit helpful.

They aren't handling this flawlessly, but it is a bit of a no-win situation. The media is going to ask, the contingent who want Sammy around will make some noise too, and "we want our nice PR events not to be marred by morons who will boo Sammy" is a hard sentiment to sanitize.

It is not a no-win at all. The boos at the 100-year thing would have been negligible at best. The media is going to ask more the longer they keep this nonsense up. It really wasn't an issue until the Cubs went out of their way to make it an issue and decline that Sammy had work to do. This is on them, not on moron fans or the media.

I'm not sure what the last phrase means but letting things like the fear of boos at a PR event dictate corporate policy is pretty stupid.

Weren't there some boos at the Cubs Convention in January? Guess the Ricketts had better trash that too.

It's sarcasm. Fear of boos is a stupid reason to do anything, and if that has anything to do with the Ricketts' reasoning, it's ridiculous.

Not wanting boos at a PR event is ridiculous and stupid?

Not really. If TT is right, it actually makes sense at least. A lot moreso than what we've been told.

Uh, yeah it is ridiculous and stupid.

That does not make any sense whatsoever, nor does it justify the stupid decision.
