I guess it depends on how you define "have a chance". To me, merely making the playoffs does not count as a legitimate chance to win the championship.

At least 10 MLB teams can win the World Series, because there's no rhyme or reason to what happens in the playoffs.

Since 2006 (I chose to start there because I didn't want to list the 2005 winner. Also, someone mentioned the last 8 cup winners) have been the Cards twice, Giants twice, Red Sox Twice plus Phillies and Yankees each once. While baseball playoffs are pretty random, there certainly seems to be a pattern of well run franchises, that are always in the mix are the one's that win.

The NFL has had the last team in win the Super Bowl several times recently (Green Bay in 2010, the Giants twice, Pittsburgh in 2005 I believe too).

I think that has more to do with how the NFL determines playoff seeds and the relative brevity of their season than it does with having lots of teams having a realistic chance. Football is also different since it's single elimination.

Everyone keeps talking about all this parity because of the strict salary cap, but I was just thinking....last year's conference finals featured the last 4 champions (Penguins, Blackhawks, Bruins, Kings) and in the semis this year guess which 4 teams are still alive? Yep, those same 4 teams. And each of them is favored to win their series (although the Bruins lost game 1). I'd have to listen to some arguments from those that are diehards of the NHL as a whole, but it seems like if you can lock in your stars and be smart about adding depth and limit bad contracts, you can have consistent staying power, no?

All 4 teams have several Hall of Fame caliber players in their primes. All 4 teams have made some savvy trades that have allowed them to stay under the cap. And like all teams in every major sport that have staying power, these teams keep developing players that produce at the NHL level.

Montreal just coughed up a two goal lead in the last ten minutes. No lead is safe in these playoffs.

And now Boston has the lead. Fun game to watch.

It has been though I'd like to see Montreal win the series.

Weird, because games 6 and 7 in the 1st round and games 2 and 3 of the 2nd round are scheduled as back to backs, by tomorrow night the Rangers will have played 5 playoff games in 7 days and on both the back to backs, there was travel in between games.

Tuesday - Game 6

Wednesday - Game 7

Friday - Game 1

Sunday - Game 2

Monday - Game 3

Penguins fans told me this morning they were actively rooting against the Blackhawks this weekend because "they are making the Pens look bad by winning so easily".
