With the way Olt and Valbuena have played this spring, it seems like it was just a question of which of Murphy/Barney was going to go.

Barney has more value but my disdain is such that I still almost would have rather him gone.

I don't really care who went, I just hope they put the best players out there on a daily basis and guys aren't getting PT just to build value. If that's Bonifacio and Valbuena most of the time, fine. I get the need to keep Barney though, since there's really no other viable backup to Castro.

I agree. I think there is a strong probability that Barney's value continues to decline, and since there are a lot of better options either on the roster or in the pipeline, I'd rather see him gone sooner than later.

I agree, really wish it was Barney

Some say he was traded and some say he was claimed. It would be nice to get something for him, though it likely doesn't matter much in the end.

all good points.

I hope Barney starts here for three more years just to troll everyone who moans about him constantly. I hope we trade Castro for some awesome pitching and Barney never leaves our infield.

Seriously why the [expletive] would you hope for something so [expletive] terrible?

Why would you hope that?

Because he's not *that* bad of a player, but people act like he is. They've got Barney Derangement Syndrome.

The day Darwin Barney is the worst overall player in our starting lineup, we'll be a good baseball team.

He is a bad player who now makes a lot more than the minimum.

This is dumb Kyle, even for you.

Now I hope he bats leadoff. You wanna press for more?

Sure, he is a bad player who makes a lot more than the minimum and will only get more expensive as he gets worse. Wanting him here for three more years and batting him leadoff makes you an idiot and/or a person who wants to see the Cubs lose as much as possible.

Five years, team captain, bats leadoff, and gets a few clutch hits so that every casual person who finds out you are a Cubs fan gives you three minutes on why he's a better player than Javier Baez.

Barney does seem to get the short end of the stick with how people view him. This year will go one of two ways. Either his AVG last year was a BABIP anomaly and he'll bounce back to roughly 2012 offensive levels, at which point he's a league average 2B and not worthy of disdain. Or he's gone full Theriot and people know he can't make hard enough contact so his offense stays terrible and he's a platoon/backup IF at best and needs to be traded. Given the current roster construction I'd let him earn any starting assignments against RHP, but he's necessary on the roster until Baez gets here and almost certainly was a better choice for the 25 man roster than Murphy(discounting trade value/return).

Yeah, that's far from true and 2B might even have a chance at being the worst position this year (phrasing it this way because of OF platoons) if Barney were to start all year.

Thankfully, he almost assuredly won't.
