Michael Bennett has re-signed - or is close to re-signing - with the Seahawks.

So the Super Bowl just reminded us that you win with a great defense and don't need a franchise QB to win.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I really don't think many conclusions can be taken from that game. Yes, the Seahawks were dominant, but the Broncos were so utterly horrifically bad.

The point has never been you need an elite QB to win a Super Bowl. Or that a defense can't win one for you. The point is that you cannot stay consistently good while depending on an elite defense. To be dominant on defense you need several studs on defense. That route gets expensive in a hurry as members reach free agency and get to move on. And then they get old as well. If you are fortunate enough to draft as well as Seattle has on defense all within a couple years and then also have the fortune of drafting a quality QB in the third and have him contribute immediately, you can replicate their success. But that's not a recipe for a decade of contending. Seattle also has 2 1st rounders on the offensive line and another 2nd.

Wouldn't complain if the Bears walked away from draft day with Kony Ealy, Stephon Tuitt and Marcus Roberson, though I'd prefer Stanley Jean-Baptiste in the third over Roberson.

Yes, yes and yes. Roberson is an interesting prospect. Can really cover, but isn't physical at all. SJB looks like a moldable piece of clay, that just happens to be 6'3", runs a sub 4.5, and appears very willing to get physical.

The the point is, as always, is that you need to draft well to be a good team. Not surprising.

Surprising is the fact that the Bears have been able to tread water for so many years with one good draft over a decade ago and not much else.

Seattle has gotten extremely lucky. Their starting DBs were all drafted in the 5th round or later, other than Earl Thomas. Can say, great drafting, but it's lucky to get all-pro production out of a guy drafted that late. Speaking of Thomas, he's actually one of their few early picks that has worked out recently. Okung was in the same draft. Bruce Irvin has been OK as a 1st round pick in 2012. Both James Carpenter and John Moffitt are bad (Moffitt has since been cut and retired). And before 2010, their #1 picks were Aaron Curry, Lawrence Jackson, and Josh Wilson. They also got nothing from their 2013 draft this year (though, didn't need it). They're going to be in a lot of trouble when their entire defense is up for free agency in the next 2 years, while Russell Wilson also will need a new contract.

Man, I really wish we could have seen the full-strength '06 Bears defense in the Super Bowl against Manning.

Wouldn't have mattered. That was all on Rexy. Though, if Mike Brown was in there, they probably don't score that first TD on Danieal Manning's blown coverage.

Maybe you get some pressure up the middle and get another turnover or two. Then just have Rex hand the ball off. I don't know :)

You're right, probably wouldn't have mattered.

It's amazing how many stars they've gotten on late round picks and UDFA.

Michael Bennett wasn't even drafted.

Bennett was with Tampa for a few years (and PFF loved him)

i wanted him pretty bad for the Lions, there was rumored interest, but they signed Jason Jones instead

He initially signed out of college with the Seahawks, was cut his rookie year and ended up with the Bucaneers.

ETA: Obviously Tampa deserves a lot of credit for developing him.

If Jean-Baptiste really runs a sub-4.5, he's going in the first round.

Cutler led the league in air yards per attempt (pretty much what it sounds like, actual yards the ball was thrown, not the yards the play ended up going for).

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/quarterback-air-yards/2013/

McCown was 7th

Can't open the link at work, but is that from point of throw or line of scrimmage?

Air yards is defined as the total distance that a football is thrown beyond the line of scrimmage to the point of reception. Air yards is calculated by taking total passing yards and subtracting Yards After the Catch (YAC).

While it isn't a clear cut statistic, it does give us an indication of how much of a quarterback's total pass yards are due to the QB vs receiver by eliminating the 2 yard dump pass that ends up being a 50 yard gain.

Isn't Okung like, good?

I think he was including him among the good ones from that draft, while pointing out their more recent ones haven't worked out as well.

The problem with that is that the QB does have some effect on YAC. Making the right choice and getting the ball there quickly both influence YAC.

In some cases, but play design has more of an effect, I think. Calling a screen pass against a blitz. Calling crossing routes against man coverage.
