Are we really surprised that public, black authority figures get anonymous racist mail? You've seen YouTube before right?

Yeah, as much as I hate Dusty, I have little doubt he's telling the truth.

It's not that I doubt him...I know that there's plenty of racist [expletive] out there...but the fact that he brings it up every time he gets fired is just bad timing. It just makes it look like whining/excuse making.

Agreed, you can't infer that that stuff had anything to do with the firing. Especially if he takes one for the team, or the hitting coach in this instance.

You think he'd learn by now to have a low level employee or something screen his fan mail.

Seriously, I'm surprised anyone of minor celebrity would open their own mail.

Dusty seems like a Dayton Moore kind of manager.

And it also has a feeling of "I was fired because I'm black" to it.

Yeah. He loves to hide behind that [expletive]. Just like bringing his little kid up to the podium with him to shield him from the media.

So when is a good time for him to bring up the hate mail he gets? Never?

The hate mail stuff sucks, but he has to know that has nothing to do with why he was fired. When he brings it up after firings, it seems like he's pointing to his being black as the reason for his firing.

It seems more like he is saying that being fired might be a good thing for him personally because the hate mail was getting intense.

You know, because thats exactly what he said.

I made a rule long ago that i would never defend Dusty Baker, so i do have to include this: [expletive] Dusty Baker.

When it's not a means of deflecting attention from his own failure.

That is what he said, I just don't believe that's why he said it. He should have brought that crap up right away when he first started getting it.

Well, I'm sure everyone sees right through what he's saying if he says he's being fired for his race.

I'd rather he say it in the offseason that during the season.

You're probably right, I guess I didn't think of what a crapstorm that would have created for his team.

It depends on what the "hate" is about. If it's racism then bring it up immediately, don't hold it in reserve as a ready made excuse when you're fired. If it's hate because he sucks at his job, lets his players abuse the media, doesn't understand statistics, then never.

I just really doubt the hate mail started in 2013. I really doubt this comes up if he's not fired.

The problem is he's falling back on the hate mail angle (which isn't the first time this has happened) instead of taking accountability for his shortcomings as a manager because he comes off as thinking he's never wrong. He wasn't wrong for abusing Wood and Prior. It wasn't his fault he didn't have "all his horses". And now that he's been fired it's not "Despite 3 playoff appearances in 4 years, I've been unable to lead our team to the World Series and I need to take accountability for that failure" and instead it's "Well the hate mail is getting pretty rough lately so maybe I should go"?

He's the worst.

plus it's not like the reds completely collapsed in the last two weeks. they made the wild card game pretty comfortably. the only thing they really did was dump that series against the pirates in cincy, but that wasn't more than a week ago. i find it hard to believe that there's been some sudden deluge of racist mail pouring into him during september.

I just find it curious that he never mentions the hate mail when things are going well. It's always right before he gets fired or right after.

Well, to be fair, 'being unable to lead a team to the World Series' in the crapshoot that is playoff baseball is not, in and of itself, a shortcoming.

He dared his boss to fire him. That's not exactly a victim.
