Damnit.

If this includes the reverse standings thing, it might not be the worst thing in the world.

But it's so typical of [expletive] that's been going on lately for this to happen right after we hear that finances aren't an issue for the posting fee.

I doubt it happens, but it'll be interesting to see if the worst record gets him first thing is still on the table. Still think we'd have a better shot with that compared to letting him choose from all the teams who bid 20 million. But it would be pretty shocking if that ended up going through.

It'd be really funny if we were ready to drop a $75m posting and this costs us the player. Epstein's going to start believing in curses soon.

The details of that system will obviously be crucial, but if it's what we understand it now(bid cap, tie goes to the worse team), then you're comparing the odds of the Cubs winning a blind bid against everyone v. the odds that none of HOU/MIA/CHW are willing and able to drop something like 6/90 (posting fee + contract) on Tanaka. I'm not sure which odds I like more.

I don't know about the Sox or Marlins, but I'd be very surprised if the Astros didn't bid the max in that scenario.

Has anyone heard anything about rules prohibiting a sign and trade if these rules go through? I would guess they will treat it the same as a draft pick, but I have not seen anything reported yet.

Seriously? I'd take our chances against HOU/MIA/CHW any day over hoping we outbid the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, or anyone else who feels like throwing a big bid. I think the big concern, as someone alluded to above, is that this dissuades teams from posting talents like Tanaka.

I like the second one better, but I think they're both pretty negligible.

Considering it's a FA signing and you can't trade those signings until June of the following season, I highly doubt that would be an option.

I can't imagine that NPB would approve the new system and then just stop posting players, but I guess it's possible they could sit on Tanaka another year. It wouldn't change their return any.

I do wonder if this makes it more likely Maeda is posted now. Before it was up in the air because he may have been overshadowed by Tanaka, but if they'll get their 20 million either way, they could do it this year. Would make a nice consolation prize if the Astros snapped up Tanaka.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I definitely think the Astros(and White Sox for that matter) would ante up 20 mill and the contract needed to get him.

In no way do I think it's fair to give last place teams another advantage and another reason to tank though.

If 20 mill is set, I hope he gets to pick who he wants to negotiate with. At least we could try communicating we'd give him the most money on his contract.(whether true or not) Outside of that, giving him the true "staff ace" title is all we've got possibly going for us, in my mind.

NY and LA both have much larger Asian populations and better current rosters.

I was thinking Maeda was more of a back end type? I can't imagine the team getting 20 mill or nothing, when posting guys. Either way though, I've not been under the impression Maeda would fetch that even in the old system.

There are still conflicting reports on whether it would be the winning percentage thing or letting the player choose.

I had heard that the Cubs had been trying to drum up some goodwill with Tanaka and he seemed to like us or something. can't remember where. Maybe ABTY. Hopefully it could work with him like it worked with Jimenez.

It's almost as if maybe fielding a team that isn't a Frankenstein's-monster collection of nightmares just might help bring in better players...

If there was an Ichiro and a Harper coming out the same year I would hope my team finished dead last.

Well, assuming they did not go to the playoffs.

Pretty sure that was ABTY. A player randomly just liking us the best is how we get all our best players. Santo, Dawson, and I think it was rumored that's how we got Eloy Jiminez.

Just heard that it won't be exclusive rights for team with lowest bid. All teams that tie will get the negotiating rights to Tanaka.

Don't really trust him but we'll see.

Arguello can't even get the most basic things right. Why would it ever be the team with the lowest bid?
