According to another board, Levine mentioned Valbuena (not Lake) possibly going with Garza to Cleveland like some others mentioned as a possibility.

Wow I just now realized I completely forgot to put Valbuena's name in my post. I was wondering why people were confused. Obviously it makes no sense to call up Lake just to trade him.

Why would those two be connected though? Lake is already on the 40 man, so calling him up doesn't make a trade any easier, especially since Garza is supposed to be traded at any moment, so it's not an audition for one team.

that would be AWESOME if the indians were too cheap to send out a scout and insisted we put lake in games on tv so they could decide whether to trade for him

I'm pretty sure that's where Jed/Theo would tell them to [expletive] off

But that gives me an idea!!!

Cubs Den[/url]"]Update: 5:31 PM: Now hearing that teams have until 10 ct to get their final offers in. Trade should be done in 24 hrs one way or another. Mike Olt supposedly not involved.

Maybe trying to force the Red Sox to make a hard move given the Bucholz results?

Any chance we make it a threeway to get a top pitching prospect the Cubs like?

Just as an example

Braves Get: LHP James Russell, SS Luis Sardinas (or Mike Olt?)

Cubs Get: RHP Lucas Sims, C Jorge Alfaro, RHP Alex Asher, RHP Cody Martin

Rangers Get: RHP Matt Garza, OF Nate Schierholtz

I mean obviously that's a big big trade example, though to me it makes a lot of sense on all sides.

Any chance to get Jackson AND Perez? Guessing no. I like Jackson more (ironically) but he's a couple years away. I think I'd prefer Jackson and Ramirez over Perez and probably whatever other arm they'd be willing to throw in...especially if Olt is involved.

Not going to pretend to know anything about CJ Edwards stuff, but his numbers are filthy.

Edwards is an athletic arm that has hit mid-90's and, IIRC, shown some potential with his breaking ball. Obviously, Low A numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt, but he is an intriguing arm.

If we can get Jackson/Edwards from the Rangers, I think I'll be pleased. Two high upside arms for a half-season of Garza is a solid return, even if they are far away.

Thanks. I was thinking it was high A for some reason.

Junior Lake is getting called up and Levine was on ESPN 1000 just recently saying he could be in a deal with Garza going to Cleveland. There's a decent amount of smoke there.

that would be awesome. every time lake makes an error, the announcers could say something about mistake by the lake.

Mistake by the lake in the Jake.

Agreed, though I also would like to try to grab Victor Payano. He wasn't in BA's top 30 for the Rangers, but he's a 6'6" 20 year old lefty who's projectable who can already run his fastball up to 97 and a potential plus 12-6 curve. He's a youngster in A+ with a 25% K rate. He's a work in progress, but he's got all sorts of potential. At the very least, no lefty will hit him coming out of the pen. Overall stats suck though he's not giving up hits and getting whiffs: 5.42 ERA, 63 H, 83:45 K:BB in 74.2 IP at Myrtle Beach. He's definitely a guy I'd like to sneak in a deal with another more refined pitching prospect or two.

Here's a video on him.

he was sitting 90 to 95 in that, CB in the mid 70s.

Not that I'm ever right about this kind of stuff, but I just don't really like any of the Rangers' pitchers and I wouldn't want Olt as more than a throw-in. I'm hoping somebody else swoops in.

Sources: Right-hander C.J. Edwards, 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA for Rangers’ Class A Hickory club, is in play in Garza talks, sources say.

I don't want Olt. It has a little bit to do with his struggles this year, but more to do with the fact that I'd rather load up on arms unless it's a top level positional prospect.

Realistically, the Rangers aren't a great match. The Red Sox are still the best match, with enough upper level arms that they might consider dangling one. Cardinals would be an excellent match.

I'm actually sort of wary on the Diamondbacks, depending on the names out there. I want ceiling, even if it's far away.

I think Payano's upside is superior to CJ Edwards (more a testament to Payano's upside than any comment on Edwards, who I like), but Edwards, despite being a level back, feels slightly safer as of now. That said, I have odd visions of Jay Jackson with CJ Edwards. To be clear, I like CJ a fair amount.

A Payano/Jackson combination would be fine. A Payano/Edwards combination would be disappointing unless a 3rd piece was good enough to view it as a high quantity of solid quality trade. I'm sure there's other iterations out there that I haven't pondered too much.

To clarify: I do not know who exactly the #Cubs would get from #Rangers for Garza. Just reporting Olt and Edwards are among names in play.

Deal, to my knowledge, is not done. Reporting that it is getting closer, according to an official involved in the talks.

@thekapman:Fresh off the press: AL scout I trust says "Rangers can't afford to not make this deal. That's a great position to be in for Theo and Jed."

Awful nice of Jim to say that.

Edwards is actually in normal A ball, not low A (nitpicking). AKA our Kane County. Yeah he's maybe a tad old at 21, but I mean most of us are high on Pierce Johnson and he was 22 in Kane County this year until the recent call up. Pretty age appropriate actually considering he's probably going to be in A+ before the years over.

Latest is Rangers pushing Olt in deal looks very close.

Looks like two P and one position player.

Yeah, your right on the level. i still go by High A/Low A/Shortseason in my mind, but technically, he's in A ball. I still haven't really gotten used to the whole Class A and then Class A Advanced designation. The old High A/Low A was a lot easier. It's the same idea.
