I wonder if it's IFA pool space.

ETA: Guess not.

I mean...he's been terrible this year, but

-He had a nearly impossiblly low BABIP

-He was signed cheaply for next season

-The return on the trade will almost certainly suck

I guess I'm hoping for IFA dollars?

ETA: Or not

Any chance this part of a larger Garza trade? Highly unlikely but they are interested.

Otherwise this came outta nowhere. I think this means DeJesus hangs around another year, especially with us likely trading Schierholz.

Yeah, that was a piece I was happy to have penciled in for next year. If it expedites Lake getting called up, I'll be interested. Even with the low BA though, he's not a guy I'd just dump.

I think its TBD on which of Schierholtz or DeJesus is moved. But I do think one will be here next year.

With the hope and assumption that they continue to try and bring back guys higher in the minors...

Syracuse has a ton of old relievers that have gaudy K/BB numbers. Maybe Erik Davis? He's had a nice run since giving up starting last year.

Harrisburg has even more old relievers with big K/BB numbers. I can't help but wonder if this is what the Cubs will look like at these levels after all the college arms they've been drafting reach the upper minors. Aaron Barrett seems to have his control problems of 2011 worked out and needs promoted to AAA yesterday, much like Zac Rosscup in our system. Nate Karns has big stuff and is old because he had labrum surgery but is still mowing guys down.

Since he said Cubs get minor league pitcher my guess is Sammy Solis. Has had injury problems but has upside. Just seems like the guy Theo would target (someone in the Nats 10-20 range is fair for Hairston).

I think Major League deals are dead under the new CBA, but I'm remembering second hand info to get to that.

Since there's already 5 OF on the MLB roster without Hairston, they can bring up whichever bat they feel will be most useful. Maybe they take the opportunity to give Lake some ABs. Maybe they give Brad Nelson an attaboy call up until DeJesus is healthy.

It's always possible that IFA money could still come over. It was reported very late that the Dodgers acquired some in the Nolasco trade.

The news from Rosenthal is very much focused on the "Nats acquire Hairston" without much clarity on what's coming back too.

Kyle and Tranny are right - under the new CBA, there are no more major league contracts for draft picks.

Reports that Scott Hairston might be moving to Nationals. If true, his professionalism will be missed. Great, great guy to have around.

i hope this development doesn't affect Sweeney's attitude toward a possible 3-year extension

Solis turns 25 next month. Missing 15 months for TJS(and a recent DL stint for shoulder discomfort too) has really impeded his progress. He's still in High A. (or will be once his current rehab is finished). Purke is throwing low to mid 90's again and is also in High A for them.

from the feldman trade, i suspect this is a big part of the trade plans for some of the lesser guys like hairston, feldman, probably schierholtz, etc. the bullpen is such a train wreck and there really don't seem to be many legitimate power arms in the high minors, at least as far as guys who are performing well and knocking on the door. mcnutt and zych have good arms, for example, but have been pretty spotty.

seems like a good plan to me. you'll find guys like hairston and schierholtz on the market every year. the cubs really seem to have amassed enough quality pitching in the low minors; now it's time to fill in at the upper minors and get a few guys who might turn into good middle relievers.
