Solis turns 25 next month. Missing 15 months for TJS(and a recent DL stint for shoulder discomfort too) has really impeded his progress. He's still in High A. (or will be once his current rehab is finished). Purke is throwing low to mid 90's again and is also in High A for them.

You're not getting a finally healthy and dealing Matt Purke for Scott Hairston.

What about Ian Krol?

Sign me up.

Krol is currently on the MLB roster though and has been for a month, so depending on how literalist you want to be with Rosenthal's wording, he might already be excluded.

seems like a good plan to me. you'll find guys like hairston and schierholtz on the market every year.

wouldn't Chris Young (career .836 OPS vs. LHP, impossibly low BABIP) be the perfect Scott Hairson replacement...albeit at probably double the price

Someone over at BN said a international slot is also coming with the pitcher...No idea how valid that guy is or what his source is though..So taking that with a grain of salt.

Oh, I know. I had forgotten he existed though until I started looking at their system. Solis seems like a best case scenario to me.

Krol seems like an overpay from the Nationals standpoint but maybe Hairston is more valuable than I give him credit for. Also seems like it'd be tough for a contender to part with a player contributing to the big league squad in a trade for a bench player.

Agreed on all fronts. To look at the other side of that coin though, the Nats already have 4 relievers pitching very well, and the aforementioned glut of old relievers on hand at AA/AAA. Hairston is under control through next year, and the Cubs certainly don't have a pressing need to trade him, with his performance, contract status, and OF injuries. Not sure if that adds up to Krol, but the extra year of team control could give us more of a surprise than thought at first glance.

I'm honing in on Brett Mooneyham or Nate Karns if the Cubs just got a pitcher.

If IFA pool money is in play, someone like Aaron Barrett or Paul Demny could be intriguing.

Cubs look at Lake to take Hairston's role next year, according to Heyman. Cubs are chipping in 500k of Hairston's remaining salary this year, but none next year.

What about Robbie Ray, though he just made his first start in Double A. He's the National's version of Dillon Maples from the 2010 draft, except of course, pitching. He's a lefty who sits in the low 90s but can turn it up to 96. He was all kinds of awful in High A as a 20 year old -- he had one more strikeout than runs allowed -- but this year he's been pretty good in his second trip to Potomac. He's leading the league in strikeouts, just ahead of teammate AJ Cole. He has some walks issues, but he's a young lefty with a pretty good arm who has, to this point, gotten a bunch of whiffs. He may have powered himself above Sammy Solis and Brett Mooneyham, but he was pretty far off the radar coming into the season.

While I'd love Purke or Mooneyham, or even Solis, Ray also interests me though it's a pipe dream scenario.

I don't know anything about Ivan Pineyro, but he's intriguing. He pitched well in A before making the jump to High A, has a good career K rate and doesn't walk a lot of people. No idea what stuff he has though.

Donnie Murphy was pulled from Iowa tonight after hitting a HR. Solid guess as to who's coming up.

Oh, good. Brent Lillibridge. I bet Dale can't wait.

I think Murphy got HBP and that's why he was pulled.

If IFA is coming back and they get an arm that has a decent shot at being a reliever, preferably somebody with a good FB, that's win.

Any chance this part of a larger Garza trade? Highly unlikely but they are interested.

Otherwise this came outta nowhere. I think this means DeJesus hangs around another year, especially with us likely trading Schierholz.

I think its TBD on which of Schierholtz or DeJesus is moved. But I do think one will be here next year.

I'd be a tad surprised if DeJesus is moved. Not impossible, but it's hard to see which team, barring injury, would move for him as a starter, and it's hard to imagine a team moving for him as a bench piece.

I'd be a tad surprised if we got Purke for someone like Hairston, who is useful, but with some positive reports on Purke this year, he's probably more valuable than Hairston's worth. Here's hoping. I could actually see Solis - it would be an "Arrieta-esque" gamble, a guy who was viewed relatively well but due to injuries, hasn't progressed. Not exactly an "upside" gamble in the Vizcaino and even Arrieta sense, but a gamble on an intriguing arm for a part-time player like Hairston - not the worst return.

Just watch it be some random upside flyer in the low levels and not a name anyone expects.

Gonna be stunned if it's Nate Karns. All indications are that the Nationals are very, very high on him.

Anyhow, it's an A ball guy. Solis actually sounds like a pretty good gamble to me. Here's hoping.

I'd rather Lake get regular AB's somewhere. Now, I haven't really followed much of late, but his swing used to get out of rhythm, and if he's getting inconsistent AB's, don't know how much use that would be for us.

That said, maybe he's adjusted. Furthermore, at some point, you have to give him a shot or move on, and he's done enough to get a shot. I guess it's not the worst thing if he's up as a util/super-util guy, just don't ... love it.

I don't know the severity of DeJesus' injury, but if it is one that he can come right back from at least a few weeks before the deadline, I'd think it would have minimal affect on his value. Especially with his 2014 team option making him more than a rental.

This is why Watkins would be my choice. I understand them wanting Lake to play everyday, and/or they don't feel he's had enough time in at AAA, but Watkins is becoming a [expletive] or get off the pot guy, who's future likely is utility. There's no guarantee that he's anything more than a Brent Lillibridge, but once the truck starts backing up-and ours seems to have, then it's time to start auditioning guys that could be of use going forward rather than 30something retreads.

Well, my thing about Watkins has always been ... he's a util/super-util guy who has to convince me that he can start. I know people got excited about his hot streaks in the summer (at last check, didn't he have a hot June ... is he doing his summer "hot streak" again?), and maybe my initial wariness to Watkins as a starter influenced my ability to get excited about those hot streaks, but I've just never been convinced that he's a potential 2nd base starter. I still hope I'm wrong, even though we have Alcantara and other options in the pipeline to potentially fill 2nd.

That said, super-util guys are valuable, and his ability to man all three up-the-middle spots, plus offer some base-running, can fill a critical role if he's given that shot.

Wish it was someone more MLB-ready, but Pineyro is interesting.
