If it comes down to signing one guy who'll immediately be a Top 3 prospect in our system or signing two guys who might crack our Top 30, the choice is obvious.

I'd love to have both, but give me Bryant any day.

From a purely humane perspective (non-sports perspective), I hate this for Clifton. He had no reason to be dishonest and claimed the Cubs lead him to believe (obviously nothing was official) they would sign him for "third round money". Granted, this kid is 18 and in my line of work I know how 18 year olds can be told one thing and hear another. However, for whatever reason, he was under the impression he was going to receive a really healthy bonus and also said publicly that he really wasn't the type to want to further their education. It's gotta be crushing to him. All that being said, he's an extremely talented pitcher that can fine tune his talents at a JUCO for a couple years and come back and even stand to increase his value. So I can only feel so bad.

He could also take a few hundred thousand dollars and start his pro career now. It's not as awesome as $800k, but I don't think he'll need to go on suicide watch.

It's the players and their agents that are reporting their signing bonuses to the media, right?

If a couple of bonuses were slightly exagerated, there could be a few more dollars to play with here.

But if it's team sources, forget what I just wrote.

HAHAHA.

How is he going to get through life?

Apparently there are rumblings on Twitter that Clifton will still sign.

Yeah, I don't understand it. You're taking a huge risk by going to college and potentially leaving a retirement fund on the table.

Right. Plus opportunity cost of cash in hand, etc. Just take it.

They're supremely confident in their abilities, enough so to be willing to gamble on the chance of increasing their bonuses. And they might be upset they didn't get offered more now. They probably see the success of guys like Gerrit Cole and Kris Bryant turning down millions out of HS and getting paid more out of college and think that could be them, all whole ignoring cautionary tales like Karsten Whitson, Austin Wilson and Dylan Covey.

Besides, you're going to get better coaching at the professional level than college and are able to concentrate on baseball all day unlike in college with NCAA restrictions and class schedules.

Obviously some kids need to go to college to mature; you don't want them turning pro when they're not physically or mentally ready.

Well, maybe it was an overreaction. But I was really just saying it would have to be disappointing to think you are getting 800K and have to "settle" on 100K. Yes, he's extremely lucky and much luckier than I am. That's not the point. The point is if he signs for 100,000 and blows out his arm the next day, he's lost out on $700,000. I think that would be a big deal. That's all I meant.

That's not true at all. He should consider himself lucky then that he got $100k before blowing out his arm. He hasn't lost anything he never had in the first place.

I'm still not over the $6.7m signing bonus I lost by never being good enough at baseball to get drafted. I had an obp over .400 and was like 12/14 is SB attempts. WTF baseball?

That is not at all what I'm saying. Whatever.

I was just messing. I get your point and it's valid. I've been there on a much smaller scale. Bonuses this year are rumored to be as high as X. When they come, they're maybe X/2 and it's bummer city bc you've already made plans for X.

Yeah. And I completely understand if anyone mistook my first post as "OH NO, THE POOR SOUL THAT HAS TO PLAY BASEBALL FOR A LIVING". But regardless, it was at least rumored that they had previously discussed "third round money" and now it looks like he'll get about an eighth of that if he wants to sign. He's still insanely lucky overall, and he has options and all of them are good options, but there is a pretty damn big distinction between 100K and 800K.

Blue Jays supposedly won't sign first rounder Phil Bickford. I assume this is just negotiation tactics; he better not end up at Fullerton.

I don't know, this (failing to sign an early round pick) wouldn't be unprecedented for them.

Indeed but Beede didn't sign under the previous CBA. Not signing Bickford hurts their chances at some late round high bonus guys they seem likely to sign.

ETA: Never mind -

@jimcallisBA: Yes. @Church_Ben: if the @BlueJays lose the Bickford slot money, have they still saved enough for both Tellez and Brentz? #mlbdraft

This is a good point. I suspect that BA has pretty good access to mlb sources, so my guess is that what they report is pretty much accurate.

But what comes from Boras might be different. Perhaps Bryant has a $6.7 deal, but $250 of that is for dental school? Who knows.

WTH, Tyler? This is one of the higher ranked prep Catchers in the draft. He must have really changed his bonus demands. I figure if teams had known this, he'd have been a top 5 round pick, instead of lasting as long as he did. We've got 440,925 to offer Clifton, according to Yagyu at PSD.

Well hopefully Clifton is satisfied with 440,000 and signs.I sure as hell would be. We can't go over and potentially lose a future first round pick, which Theo and Jed would never do and know that.He was looking for 3rd round money, right? What is that around 6-8 hundred thousand?

Yep. Well, technically $440,924.99.
