He also turns 25 next month. And he's putting those numbers up in the PCL.

So long as Olt wouldn't be the center piece of the deal, I'd have no problem taking him on. He wouldn't be my choice, but he isn't devoid of value.

Case in point, last year, he hit .288/.398/.579/.977 as an age appropriate (college draftee) 23-year-old in AA. Olt skipped Low-A entirely, and has progressed at a level per season since. He entered 2013 ranked as the #22 prospect by both BA and MLB. This is his scheduled AAA season. He started this season horribly. Apparently had eye issues. Took basically the month of May to get that taken care of, came back and hit .264/.364/.527/.892 in June with 18 BB against 36 Ks in 129 PAs for a 28% K rate. In the last 7 days, he's hit .316/.364/.474/.837.

Clearly, he strikes out more than anyone would want him to. And whereas, the Cubs would want to work with him on that aspect of his game, he's not as much of a reclamation project as Arrieta. If the Cubs could get the Rangers to sell low on him and get a better prospect along the lines of Luke Jackson or Jorge Alfaro (would go crazy over CJ Edwards but I can't see that happening), that's a good return for Garza in my book.

I don't know how strong the Nationals interest is but they sure seem to have quite a few arms that might interest the Cubs.

Robbie Ray

Taylor Jordan

Nate Karns

Ian Krol

Matt Purke

It doesn't sound like the Pirates are in on Garza, but I think they could put together a very competitive offer without moving Cole or Taillion. One of these guys would be a good start. If the Pirates are desperate enough, maybe more than one!

Nick Kingham

Tyler Glasnow

Luis Heredia

The Pirates also have some interesting catching prospects. If they do want Schierholtz and aren't willing to part with one of the three above arms for him, getting one of these catching prospects would be nice.

Wyatt Mathisen

Tony Sanchez

I don't care what anyone says, if we could get Olt as a secondary piece, I'd be thrilled. I really don't know what the primary piece would be seeing as a lot of their one time prospects are in the big leagues filling in for their banged up starters, but last I checked, they still had a pretty good system.

Olt might as well be Brett Jackson at this point. I'd take him as a throw-in, I guess.

Agree. Third guy, fine. "Advanced" guy so they can more easily justify a trade in which one of the two primary guy is in A-ball, great. But he's such a remote long-shot in my book.

Jackson, Ian stewart, we're 0-2 lately on those kinds of guys. Maybe it's time to get Olt and finish the strikeout.

I'd say a 2nd piece. I'm not quite sure what people are expecting at this point, but if we could get someone's equivalant of say Alcantara or Pierce Johnson plus Brett Jackson and a low level guy in the neighborhood of Yao Lin Wang or Frank Del Valle, do you take it?

Nope.

Come on, it will be better than that. Cubs are getting a Top 75 guy or 2 Top 125 types IMO.

With the suspension of Cruz and Berkman's career going down the cliff, the Rangers also need a power righty bat as bad, if not worse, than starting pitching. This is ideally a time when Olt should be invaluable to their organization. Instead, if they're willing to discard Olt as a throw in while his value is at rock bottom, they must have a really bleak view of his longterm projection. The Rangers have been good as about anyone in talent scouting and development over the last few years.

The Rangers have 2 SP (Lewis, Harrison) on the 60 day DL and another 3 (Darvish, Ogando, Tepesch) on the 15 day DL.

And if/when Cruz is suspended, they're going to need a OF/DH type or two, depending on if/when/for how long Berkman's off the DL. Soriano would fill in perfectly.

With all of this being said, they still have the 4th best record in the AL, yet are fighting for the 2nd Wild Card spot; mostly because the rules state that an AL Central team must have a post season berth. If there's any team that should be willing to deal, it's them.

Olt has been hitting pretty well since he got over whatever his problem was earlier in the year. If he's not the main piece, i wouldn't mind taking an SCS on him assuming there's something in his swing they think they can fix.

.237/.337/.446 with a 30% K rate. Better, but still a lot of red flags.

we'd only take him as a 2nd piece and the rangers would want the 23rd best prospect coming into the year to be the centerpiece.

The Rangers realize that rating is irrelevant now.

@BleacherNation: RT @thekapman I'm hearing Garza will be traded by Sat. Cubs won't move him though until they get what they want.

That's Jon Heyman-esque.

Kaplan is a moron. Notice how he makes a prediction, then immediately gives himself an out in case it doesn't happen. The Cubs front office is very tight-lipped and keeps things out of the media. I highly doubt they speak to Kaplan and I highly doubt he has any "sources". He's making stuff up to keep himself "relevant".

BREAKING NEWS: Garza to be traded by Saturday if the Cubs get what they want.

Who was the breaking news guy from the old ESPN board?

Here's another one to file under "if some guy said it, it must be true."

@thekapman: An AL scout just told me that he thinks Garza is throwing so well that the Cubs are in a phenomenal spot to land a tremendous deal.

People keep saying this, but essentially everything we do is heavily leaked in advance. I know, I know, it's always the other people doing the leaking. But it's not as if it's impossible to get good rumors on what is happening with the Cubs.

Yeah, I wouldn't say they're any more secretive than the average team. Sometimes they've kept stuff on lock right until they announce it on their terms(wasn't Rizzo signed for a week before anyone knew?), but then other times you have the immediate knowledge of deals and near deals, sometimes to their detriment(Dempster).

Really? We just found out now that Garza was within seconds of being traded to the rangers last year. Texas was never named as a serious runner for Dempster until the trade was completed, i dont remember the marshall trade being leaked. Most of the leaks we do hear are probably total BS, too.

Cubs Den: Garza to Texas looks likely: http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/garza-to-texas-looks-likely/

I had heard from some industry people this weekend that Texas would be the odds on favorite to obtain the best pitcher on the market. We also heard more later that would bolster that information.

He also mentions Olt prominently as a potential return, but also the desire to get back MLB ready pitching, so the deal would presumably be Olt + Pitching, Pitching + Olt, etc.

So...Martin Perez then?

That's who I'd want from Texas.
