i'm still ok with Olt. If Theo wants him, then it's cool with me, but Texas pitching prospects don't look so great and we'd have to get some pitching back.

So...Martin Perez then?

That's who I'd want from Texas.

he doesn't inspire me at all.his k/9 is terrible and why would Texas deplete their current rotation anyway?

Leonys Martin?

that would be more like it, but doesn't help our pitching conundrum.

Texas already has a gaping hole in LF and might lose Cruz to suspension. They aren't going to be trading Martin as part of a package for Garza unless it was some type of mega-deal like Miami/Toronto or Boston/LA that involved like 3-4 Cubs(Garza, Schierholtz, Soriano, DeJesus, Gregg, Villanueva).

He's improved his walk rate more than his K rate has declined, and the point of adding Garza would be to replace Perez in the rotation anyway.

Perez fits the desire for an MLB ready starter with plenty of years of team control remaining, as he wouldn't hit FA until 2019.

what's their rotation right now? they must have someone they'd rather replace than Martin, plus I just don't see Martin panning out as anything very good. He' depth, no doubt, but I'd rather have Jackson and Buckel, they look like they have much higher ceilings.

Darvish-Holland-Wolf-Grimm-Perez right now, though Darvish is currently on the DL.

i'd still take him over martin perez, he's at least shown the ability to strike people out. he may just be having a bit of a seizure this year.

I will take Alfaro + Perez.

I highly doubt the Rangers will have any interest in Soriano. They know first hand he's a gigantic lineup liability when he's not on a hot streak. They would probably prefer Sweeney.

Darvish, Holland, and Tepesch are ahead of Perez, plus Ogando who is due back from injury after the all-star break.

Perez's star has dimmed a little bit, but he has very strong pedigree(for better or worse, he's been a BA Top 100 prospect for 5 straight years), and he's still very young for his level. He's 4 months older than Jackson, and 14 months older than Buckel.

Ogondo is set to rejoin their rotation after the All Star Break. Colby Lewis is about ready to begin rehab assignments in AA. And reportedly the only reason they put Darvish on the 15 DL because they wanted to keep him out of pitching in the All Star game, and with the break they could get him a lot of rest while only missing a start or two in the rotation. He's way high in avg. pitches per start, so they wanted to give his arm some time off as a precautionary matter.

I do like Alfaro, and minor league catchers are such a crapshoot that the Rangers may not blink at including him

The nice thing about Alfaro is he projects to stick at catcher.

I've never been a huge Perez fan even when he was loved by BA, but I do think he's shown better stuff this year since being called up (his last start not withstanding). He's not going to be a high strikeout pitcher, but when he's on his sinking fastball gets a ton of ground balls. And he's still 22. He reportedly has made a lot of improvement with his changeup.

In connect the hugs, Alex Rios was removed in the 5th and hugs commenced. Alan Henson was removed around the same time. That'd be a nice return on Rios and it takes the Pirates off of Schierholtz, if this deal happens.

Are you drunk?

Nah, when I posted that, he had just been removed and was hugging guys in the dugout, according to Twitter. But yeah, it was a stupid post and wish I had being hammered as a legit excuse.

It's that magical time of year when analysts and beat writer chomp at the bit to report every pre-game scratch, in game sub,and dugout display of man love.

Soriano, Gregg join Matt Garza on Cubs trade block.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/21456379-419/soriano-gregg-join-matt-garza-on-cubs-trade-block.html

A major-league source Sunday said the Yankees’ increasing need for an every-day bat has the surging Soriano on the team’s radar, especially given the rediscovered youth he says he feels in his legs this season.

Nate Schierholtz, one of the Cubs’ more popular trade chips, is viewed by the Yankees as more of a platoon player, especially unattractive in a division with several frontline left-handers among the contenders.

With Derek Jeter’s every-day status less than certain the rest of the year and Alex Rodriguez’s MRI exam Sunday showing a strained quad, the Yankees’ interest could get serious quickly. They have scouts following the Cubs on this trip.
