TT, was that a response to me? Because my point really was more that, in 2-3 years time, when the team might be closer to competing, Samardzija would've likely logged a ton of innings over that span.

Closer to possibly competing by 2016? Let's reel in those expectations a bit.

Okay. I have a hard time seeing the organization build up enough assets to compete in 2014. 2015 seems possible, but trying to push for a playoff spot in 2016 seems a bit more realistic to me right now.

This was the point of my other thread. The same things have been said about a bunch of teams that made significant jumps to make the playoffs, there is no threshold where you're "ready" to compete.

More to the point, the idea that there's little to no chance of the team being competitive in 2014 is crazy to me. Let them find the new Feldman/Maholm/Villanueva to round out the rotation, use Marmol's money and this year's deadline to make the pen less of a disaster, put Garza's money to Choo, and have a good year of progress from young players. You don't need 95th percentile projections to make that happen, and that's really what matters when the decision here is about trading Samardzija.

Choo would be a great guy to have as a 2 hitter, but we're also going to need something in the form of a 3-4 thumper. If they really want to expedite this thing they need to aggressively pursue Stanton. If we could get him for a package including only 1 of our big 4, the trigger must be pulled. Even if it costs 2 of them, it might be worth it if the Marlins sweeten their end of the pot.

You show me a 2-5 of Choo, Stanton, Rizzo, and a refurbished Castro and a rotation of Smardz, ?, Wood, luckier Jackson, Vizcaino or another Feldman/Maholm and we have a serious contender on our hands.

@Buster_ESPN When Diamondbacks and Cubs talked briefly about Jeff Samardzija, Cubs asked about Archie Bradley/Tyler Skaggs; talks ended.

Skaggs and Bradley alone wouldn't do it for me. It would get my attention, but it's just not quite enough.

Yeah. And this makes it sound like asking for either stopped the talks. That's pretty ridiculous, and surprising, considering how little it took for them to send Bauer away.

But really, does Buster Olney know anything about anything?

This, or it's also Kevin Towers that they are dealing with and nobody seems to understand how he values players or his transactions

I really believe that it had to mean both Bradley and Skaggs. It would be completely inexplicable for Towers to think he could land Samardzija without including either.

but just think of the prospect haul we can get for Bradley in three years when he's really good.

Well there's no sense in holding on to Bradley when we won't be ready to compete until 2021

Talk me out of this. Or tweak it to make it work.

One for one. Skaggs for Garza.

(Would like to get Adam Eaton too while including someone else from the Cubs if necessary.)

I'd be quite happy with Skaggs straight up, but I doubt Arizona makes that deal.

"@JonHeymanCBS: #orioles are interested in garza now after being lukewarm earlier, but so far they believe price is 2 high. #cubs"

Don't know if this is good or not. Could mean the Cubs are asking too much or that the bidding war is driving the price to high for the Os liking.

Rival execs believe the Cubs should be able to get more than the value of a first-round draft pick for Matt Garza; trade expected soon.

Well, I'd hope so.

Good. We have a good 4.5 weeks before the deadline. They can ask for the moon and then some for the next 4.25 of those. If somebody gives it to them, great. If July 29 rolls around and we haven't fleeced anybody, then start fielding those last minute offers. Somebody will bite. Assuming he doesn't get hurt.

Ask for the entire time, we don't have to trade him. We could keep him and look to extend him.

With Garza? I don't think Cubs will extend him. If they haven't done so by now (it seems like they tried since they got him), then it's most likely won't happen. Either Cubs trade him or keep him and give him a QO in the offseason which will result in a comp pick as someone WILL sign him to a deal.

I'd say it's 99.9999999999% he will be traded.

just like last year!

Except last year he wasn't a free agent at the end of the season with little to no hope of signing long term.

And that aside, he would've been traded had he not gotten hurt. Obviously, if he gets hurt again, that would throw a wrench into things.

I wouldn't even answer the orioles' phone calls

I would just because it'd be pretty cool to get a phone call from a Major League Baseball team.
