Deal replaces his current deal, starting this year, and runs through 2019

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

Sources: #Cubs agree with Rizzo on 7-year, $41 million contract. Deal runs from 2013 through ’19. Story coming on Foxsports.com.

Steal.

Edited to reflect that it's not really an extension since it replaces his current deal

So we buy out two pre-arb years, four arb years and one free agent year.

Can't really tell without knowing the extent of the escalators, but that sounds like a very reasonable deal for both sides. Club options are always awesome.

His arb years would have gotten very expensive. Look at Ryan Howard, for instance. Plus, the two option years are great to have. If he becomes what we think he will, I could easily see those 4 arb years going 4,8,12, and 15 mill, with a 15 mill 1st year FA on the low end for each season. Great, great deal.

No no-trade clause in the Rizzo deal.

That's what's her name, ms. hunger games/mystique/bipolar oscar lady, during the oscars (before she won) doing a pre-scripted pre-planned camera shot of her in the audience. The others around her knew of the upcoming facetime aswell. And they are actors also, so. .

That's pretty much to be assumed with any deal handed out by this front office. I'd be beyond shocked if they ever gave one out.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs have signed Anthony Rizzo to a seven-year, $41 million extension.

The deal includes two club options and has escalators that could bring the total value to $73 million. It's significantly more than the five-year extension the Diamondbacks gave Paul Goldschmidt this season and buys out all of Rizzo's arbitration years and at least his first year of free agency. Rizzo is now under contract through 2019. The Cubs are attempting to lock him up while he's still undervalued with just over a year of major-league service.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/chicago-cubs-sign-anthony-rizzo-to-long-term-extension-jed-hoyer-theo-epstein-051213

The Cubs have reached agreement with Rizzo on a seven-year, $41 million contract through 2019, according to major-league sources. The deal also includes two $14.5 million club options, sources said.

Thus, the total value over nine years could be $68 million; Rizzo would not receive a $2 million buyout if both options are exercised. Escalators could further increase the size of the package to $73 million, sources said.

Rizzo, who has just over a year of major-league service, is earning $498,000 this season. His new deal will include an immediate increase for 2013 while covering all four of his arbitration years — Rizzo was on track for Super Two status — and his first free-agent year.

The contract is in excess of the one that first baseman Paul Goldschmidt recently received from the Diamondbacks — a five-year, $32 million extension from 2014 to ’18, with a $14.5 million club option for ’19 that could bring the total package to six years, $46.5 million. Goldschmidt, however, was eligible for three years of arbitration, not four.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro, another of the team’s cornerstones, also is signed through 2019. The club also would like to sign right-hander Jeff Samardzija and possibly righty Matt Garza to extensions as well.
