I've seen the idea of Manny Acta floated and I think I'd like that.

If Joe Girardi is serious about wanting to manage the Cubs, then he might be staring at his last, best shot.

Multiple sources say the Cubs are poised to make the Yankees’ skipper an offer that could make him one of the two highest-paid managers in the game, from a Cubs ownership group and business side of the operation that has coveted him since long before Theo Epstein was hired as team president.

The Cubs and Girardi have expressed mutual interest through back channels for weeks, according to sources. And Girardi has been the ownership favorite two of the last three times the managerial job was open, under Tribune ownership (when Lou Piniella got the job) and Ricketts ownership (when Mike Quade was hired).

According to at least one national report Wednesday night, Girardi countered the Yankees’ offer with “parameters” it might take for him to return. His contract expires at the end of the month.

Those “parameters” are believed to go well beyond financial considerations — and, according to a source, are believed to include permission to talk to the Cubs before committing to the Yankees.

Meanwhile, Epstein has spent the last two days putting together a list of other candidates for a process he said Monday he hopes will be concluded before the general managers meetings early next month.

Former Indians and Nationals manager Manny Acta is being examined as a possible candidate to join an early list compiled by the front office that already includes Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. (who interviewed for the job two years ago) and former Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch, a candidate with player-development experience now working in the Padres’ front office.

Rays bench coach Dave Martinez is also said to be a name of interest to the Cubs, but it’s unclear whether the team will seek permission to contact him.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and business president Crane Kenney are said to be pushing hard for a chance at Girardi, but the Cubs had not received permission from the Yanks to talk to him as of Wednesday night.

For the Cubs, Girardi provides a big-name, accomplished manager with deep Chicago roots — a beloved former Cub with top managerial credentials who could help market a third-year rebuilding process that has led to the lowest attendance figures in 15 years.

Great! Now they'll have a big name President of Baseball Ops AND a Manager to hide behind while they continue to spend nothing on payroll. Theo and Jed should be hiring the manager not our corporate stooges.

I have no idea why I continue to watch Baseball Tonight. Schilling and Larkin make John Kruk seem like a voice of reason. They all say no way Girardi's coming to Chicago. So I guess that means he's coming then.

Sun-Times article is interesting. It means Girardi is seriously considering coming here. Otherwise he would just accept the Yanks' offer and remain in NY.

MLB source on Girardi. "well the Cubs are behaving like a major market team. If they get a chance to talk to him they just might land him."

Behave like a major market team when it comes to players PLZ

NY still hasn't allowed the Cubs to speak to Girardi. We'll see if that is one of Girardi's demands. Girardi while he has leverage, still can't overplay his hand, unless he's certain the Cubs want him, he'd be willing to go to the booth, or to a different organization.

Any interest in Jim Riggleman, part deux?

I'd rather roll the dice with Martinez or Lovullo.

YA DON'T SAY

He'll likely never manage again after what happened.

Yankees have denied permission to talk to Girardi per the Trib.

NY Daily News was actually the source for the Trib, fwiw.

is joe girardi really a beloved former cub? if so, why?

also, i am realllllllly not interested in girardi if this is a marketing ploy. i can talk myself into any manager they hire if he's somebody that theo et al choose, but girardi is not such an interesting candidate on his face that i'm interested if he's not chosen by the actual smart people who are supposed to be running our team.

Kansas City Royals ‏@Royals 26m

The #Royals have added Dale Sveum to the coaching staff for 2014. Sveum managed the Cubs for the last two seasons.

Bernstein just said on the radio that the Cubs fully expected permission to be denied, as this is a lateral move, not a promotion. But they feel very, very confident that they'll get Girardi, and that all the other names we're hearing are fallback candidates.

Am not much of a Girardi fan but I'd be in favor of hiring him if for no other reason that, coming from the Yankees, I simply can't imagine he'd take the Cubs job without solid assurances from the front office that our financial situation is much less dour and constrained than it's been made out to be.

That's exactly what we said when Epstein was hired. No *way* he'd be hired just to gut the payroll and run an expansion-style rebuild.

I could've made this post for you; I was so sure it was coming.

Yeah the only way they were going to get permission was if Girardi told the Yankees he would not be returning to NY.

Why? The Cubs for the next 3-8 years is likely to be a better job than the Yankees. I think it's assumed the Cubs aren't turning into Miami.
