"Sparse" in what way? He wasn't that far off from the first year.

He had a sub .300 OBP and his wOBA dropped 50 points.

I think Beane regrets signing Cespedes for that money in retrospect. And I'm a big Cespedes fan.

What? Why?

Yeah, while he hasn't been a star by any stretch, he's been worth what they're paying him, for sure. It's not like he's making $20MM a year.

Maybe he thinks Beane feels he could have gotten more than 5 WAR out of the 18MM they've paid him so far. He might be right, but it's probably not something that's haunted him thus far.

Last year was kind of sparse though, wasn't it? Looks like he's off to a good start this year.

I guess I expected Cespedes to take that next step after a good rookie year and he really hasn't yet. But yeah, he's looking good right now so maybe last year was just a sophomore slump.

And still managed to be a 2.3 WAR player vs. a 2.9 player the first year. Pretty sure it's a stretch to say that the A's are regretting that contract unless we're just assuming that spending money at all hurts them.

Yeah, the A's aren't regretting the contract unless his bat goes further downhill, but last year was a clear step down for Cespedes. They put him at a position where he wouldn't kill them defensively to help keep his overall value constant, but he was basically a league average LF(10th of 16 qualified LF in WAR, 13th of 30 if you drop to 400 PA), which was a big disappointment after his 2012.

Why are the Cubans so bad in the field?

I mean, Cespedes isn't a good CFer...but it's not like that's anything similar to Abreu who is just a fat tub who is beyond awful at the easiest position.

Well, yeah, it's a sliding scale, but generally it seems like a knock against them. I get why the hitting approaches would be different, but it would seem like fielding is fielding. Is the coaching generally just not as good or is there just not nearly as much emphasis placed on it?

Those just happen to be two bad fielders who are also Cuban, is my guess. Puig grades out well in RF, Ramirez is an offensive shortstop who has been a defensive asset for years, no one seems to doubt Soler's future position as RF, and at least one if not both of Diaz and Guerrero who signed this offseason are supposed to be defense-first, same with Iglesias and Betancourt too.

You can't just generalize like that, especially since MLB doesn't get access to the full pool of Cuban players. Jose Iglesias is a great defender at a tough position and Dodger minor league SS Erisbel Arruebarruena might be even better.

How worried are you that Albert Almora has yet to take a walk in 94 PA's?

I'm not worried. Then again, it doesn't really affect my life, does it?

I couldn't figure out what the hell kind of inside joke was going on in here until I scrolled up and saw the post about the chat.

Remember Opening Day?

Will Rizzo ever hit lefties?

I'd rather have Cashner than Rizzo. Although, many will be outraged by such a statement.

Makes me mad I stole that guy's name for a fantasy team a few years ago.
