I am wrong about a lot of things when it comes to baseball, but occasionally I do manage to get a few things right. Apparently I will be proven right in a statement I made nearly a month ago, when I claimed that

Jorge Soler should be a September call-up. Javier Baez's fate this year is something that I've gone back and forth on throughout the season. Initially, Baez looked to be up as soon as he gained an extra year of control, but early season struggles put that plan on hold.

Scoff all you want; keeping everything he owns in a bindle makes his getaway from the daily Cubs loss all the easier.

Beans and some old pie he stole from a windowsill.

I'm surprised re Soler.

I read Rubio, writes stuff for Arguello. He's also at BP, getting him was a coup for Arguello. I read any of Loxas' minions.

I'm not too surprised. He's got a MLB contract so he doesn't fall in the prospect realm of losing team control and what not. There's no harm in bringing him up early, plus he was already advanced enough that he would've moved quickly (maybe already been on the club) if his injuries didn't keep him out so long.

So Brandon McCarthy's pretty good when allowed to use his cutter

What the hell? I thought that was only an Orioles thing.

On Saturday, GM Brian Cashman said that a study by the club’s analytics department before the trade convinced the Yankees that McCarthy could get back to the success he had enjoyed in previous years if he reincorporated his cutter, a pitch the Diamondbacks instructed him to stop throwing this season.

i didn't even know this was a thing. it makes no sense. mechanically it's a fastball

apparently not, as they are attributing a lot of young pitchers' arm troubles to throwing cutters in high school

It was heartbreaking that time he had to save Theo from being driven off in the back of that orphan truck.

I'm just glad they're singin hobos and not stabbin hobos.

It's kind of like throwing a faster version of a slider. Can put similar stress on an arm as a slider.

Not as much torque, but the fingers are connected to ligaments and finger position can actually be dangerous as well. It's like no sunscreen on a cloudy day, you think it's safe to do.

i don't think it's at all like a slider, which a) is gripped with the middle finger on the circumference and b) the wrist is supinated whereas a cut fastball is thrown with the index finger on the circumference and no wrist action. a slider is as different from a cut fastball as it is a screwball

only if your grip is too tight, which will compromise the soundness of your arm rotation (elbow issues) and increase the likelihood of tendinitis. the common conceptual mistake is that a pitching grip imparts spin through force or pressure. rather, it's the friction imparted at the contact points that drag the ball as it is launched from the hand
