They knew that they didn't have any other options besides George Kottaras and John Baker.

I'm not really asking if it justifies it (nor am I only talking about the team's performance. I'm talking about everything terrible that is happening/has happened).

I guess the term "forgive" is kind of open ended, though.

My question about all of this is how can we assume the interest will be there for a mega-TV deal in 2019? We're going to be at 5 straight losing seasons after this year with no reason to believe it'll get considerably better without a ton of luck (not going to spend any money, so all/a vast majority of the prospects and bargain shopping will have to pan out to be any better than .500ish).

If we're in a position entering 2019 where we've been under .500 for, say, 7-8 out of 10 years, is the upside going to be there for these TV rights deals (and even our own network)? Kenney/Ricketts seem to be banking a lot on the tradition of the Cubs and it seems like there's a really high likelihood it backfires on them.

If we do get the TV deal and become a behemoth and starting acting like a major market team, I'll forgive them for a decade of horrific baseball, but I won't forget it.

Would the half glass full guy say they knew they didn't need any other options because they had Castillo?

The "plan" says go with youth and don't spend money, so that pretty much meant sticking with Castillo. He has had good numbers at ages 25 and 26, so why wouldn't you go with him.

2012 25 CHC NL 52 190 170 16 45 11 0 5 22 0 0 17 51 .265 .337 .418 .754 103

2013 26 CHC NL 113 428 380 41 104 23 0 8 32 2 0 34 97 .274 .349 .397 .746 103

So, in this case the plan has worked so far?

When a catcher is putting up half-decent numbers for stupidly cheap, you don't get rid of him unless you have far better options to pursue. The Cubs didn't.

Because they knew not to, man.

He led the team in WAR last season. Pretty sure anyone that knows anything about baseball knew he had a good year.

I still don't think he can sustain this offensive performance long-term. His skill set just doesn't seem to support a .350 BABIP, and you can have 750 PAs of good luck on BIP.

He won't be like below replacement or anything when it stabilizes, though.

He led a shitty team in WAR, and in so doing he slugged under .400.

I'm honestly not seeing anything in there beyond what we've been discussing/hoping for for a while now; it's still tolerating a lot of [expletive] for years in the hope this works out.

yeah, all that stuff is basically "here are some whoever bought the team would hopefully get several years from now, assuming he doesn't accidentally burn the team down." tom does not get credit for any of that.

Bingo bango.

And I'm having a hard time seeing our TV deals higher than the Dodgers, especially in light of the fact that we still don't even have one for 2015 yet

yeah they were planning on continuing their big spending ways by going all in on mccann, but then they were like "nope, we got something here with castillo."

zero credit to the front office for castillo. come on.

they were actually rumored to be pretty heavily interested in Saltalamacchia, fwiw

Yeah, I heard they offered him $3 million over 6 years. Why pay him big money when we could get Baker on the cheap.

There is a perfect GIF from Billy Madison that's appropriate right now. Who posts it?
