Well, having a final shot to win when one of your best players is scoreless and only plays like 7 minutes due to fouls on screens is about the best you can hope for.

I honestly felt like IU was the better team. Crean failed in trying to match their quickness instead of playing his best players. Not sure why Williams wasn't playing in the 2nd half. Especially when Etherington actually got on the court. Both Perea and Fischer were effective in the first half with their size, and neither played until Fischer got in late in the 2nd.

IU needs a couple of consistent shooters to complement the athleticism, but I thought they looked pretty good last night even without Vonleh contributing. He definitely didn't look like a lottery pick last night.

Yeah, I was worried Vonleh was almost playing too well, but I didn't mean I wanted him to play that poorly. Ha.

Either way, as ugly as it was, I think last night was promising. Nothing from Vonleh. Little from Williams. Mostly crappy game from Ferrell. And they still had a chance to beat a ranked opponent at a neutral site.

I wish Duke would have a season where only awful things happen to them.

They did, in 94-95 they were awful and Coach K faked a back injury so he didn't get all of the blame. It was also the year Capel hit that magical half court shot to tie UNC...and Duke lost in OT. They also were pretty crummy the next year and then they started paying players like everyone else and became good again. True story.

Moore (72.9 career)

JJ (74.3)

Hummel (84.1 although 1 of those years was in '12)

Basically... Those 3 shot the most in those years and kept the FT% up to the low 70s as a team.

Yeah, and it doesn't help that our best shooter, Stephens, has zero FT attempts on the year either. It does look like Ronnie has turned a corner with FT shooting but Terone is still shooting his usual 50%.

That's because he rarely steps inside the three-point arc. Same reason Ryne Smith didn't get to the line much. Of course, Stephens is bigger and more athletic than Smith, so you'd like to think they'd get him into the offense a little more other than just throwing up threes.

I think he will eventually, but the value he adds outside the arc is so important at this point. He's already on pace to hit more 3's than Smith or Byrd did as a Juniors and you would have to imagine his shot totals go up when they start playing from behind in conference play. He might make more 3's this year than Smith or Byrd did as Seniors before it's all said and done. As long as he stays over 40% let him take as many as he wants from outside.

Of course. I'm not necessarily complaining about it since he's basically their best shooter, just pointing out the reason why he's not going to get to the line much.

I do believe he's capable of provide more than just a good outside shot though.

Oh I agree. If he can add some muscle, which you figure he will over four years in college, and work hard on defense there's no reason he can't make it to the NBA. If you watch his high school film he's got a good mid range game and decent handles. I'm more excited when he gets the ball than any other player on the team.

UCLA will play in the Maui Invitational next year, along with, amongst others, Indiana, Kansas, St John's and UNLV.

That should be fun. What's UCLA looking like for next year? IU and Kansas should be preseason top 10, I'd imagine.

Fringe top 25 with Kyle Anderson gone for sure but hopefully Jordan Adams still around.

2015, not 2014. Purdue is playing there next year.

Oh crap, I misread the tweet. You're right.

I'm trying to convince my wife to go to Hawaii. She was on board until she heard the word basketball.

You don't go to Hawaii to watch basketball. Haha

Hard to say who KU will even have. Wiggins, embiid, and Selden might all go pro after one year.

We'll have good players, but we might young again.

However, in 2014, they will still get some solid run in the Battle for Atlantis:

UCLA, North Carolina, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Florida, Butler, UAB, Oklahoma

Illinois at UNLV tonight, in a game that looked a lot more imposing two weeks ago. UNLV is probably around Valpo good, though, and Illinois didn't exactly put them away easily at home.
