that's what i mean; i'm glad he was making guys put the ball in play rather than getting free passes

Marte bloops it to CF: OK pitch, maybe a little bad

gets squeezed on strike 3 to Martin, walks him: meh

McCutchen rips single on FB over the plate: bad pitch

coaxes a GB other way from Sanchez that finds a hole: good pitch

K's Alvarez: good pitch

Walker's GIDP: good pitch

the results were [expletive], and it obviously wasn't ideal but it's far from deserving of the dumb DFA rhetoric

Yeah, he honestly wasn't bad today. One hard hit ball to the best player on the other team and a walk on a pitch he more than likely got squeezed on. Throw in the K and the DP ball and it's not nearly as bad as the numbers make it look.

Nothing that has happened today or monday suggests that marmol cant be as good as he was most of last year. We should absolutely keep using him (i) we dont have a reasonable alternative (ii) upside is there to help us win or enable us to move him. Its not like we have a bunch of guys we can trust to get consistent outs.

ETA: And the personal dislike of marmol is bs. Im guessing hes not nearly as effective as he used to be in part because we marched him out there 80 times a year to snap off 25 straight sliders.

Well, that's simply not true.

"Personal dislike?"

Yeah, I don't think there's much if anything personal about this. Marmol has long been a favorite here and I think most of us would like nothing more than to see him succeed.

And yes, he's probably not as effective as he once was due to him being ridden like a horse, which is unfortunate, but that's not exactly a revelation and frankly not relevant when deciding if he should remain the closer. His wildness was acceptable when no one was making contact, but that's not the case anymore, and I don't think it will be again.

Bad medicals or not, I still really wish we'd have done the Haren trade. I really didn't see that one working out poorly, even if Haren never pitched a game for the Cubs.

This last sentence of this comment makes my hed hurd.

Please explain why that trade would work out even if Haren were to never pitch a game for the Cubs. Love to hear it.

Because Marmol also would not pitch a game for the Cubs.

Because I don't believe Carlos Marmol is a good pitcher anymore, and I'd rather him not be on the team. Therefore, I'd rather have another roster spot open for somebody I think might be of more help.

And, yes, I realize Marmol was better in the second half last season, yet, I don't care. I don't think he's a good pitcher anymore.

Beat me to it.

Did you have anyone in particular in mind? If anything, Marmol is maybe buying that guy some time to develop into something more useful.

I'd ask everybody to forgive me for what I'm about to say, but I'd even take Chone Figgins on the roster than Marmol.

Just looking at the PitchFX data, I had no idea that Marmol was hitting 94 and averaging a 93.3 MPH on his fastball.

This isn't like last year when the stuff just wasn't there. I'm inclined to see him try to work out of it in low-leverage situations before just setting him on fire.

That inane "personal dislike" comment ended up being prophetic

I saw he hit 94 on a flat pitch right down the middle that was smacked into left. Velocity isn't the issue with Marmol. He can't nibble. So it's either a ball or a very hittable pitch.

That looks much better than his first outing. There's a lot of good pitches there.

I'd like to point out that I actually do own an authentic Carlos Marmol jersey that I paid almost $200 for back in 2008. I love the guy. Just don't want him on the team anymore.

has anyone thought that he is getting squeezed. I understand that he is probably not going to ever get the benefit of the doubt from umps because of his past wildness, but it seems like almost every ab he hits a corner and it is called a ball by the ump.

If he's getting squeezed there's still a world of difference between "can't hit the strike zone" and "putting a hittable fastball over the plate," which seem to be his two main options right now.
