Everyone is hating on marmol (deserved), and yes he got the loss and the blown save but fuji blew the flippin' game by losing a 5-1 lead with 6 outs left in the game not to mention it took a great play by gonzalez to keep him(fuji) from losing the lead in the 8th.

I'm not saying marmol's good but fuji has a save on 2 pitches, and got shelled worse than marmol in the next situation. He is trotting out as the new closer with a solid 11.50 era. There are big problems out there and DFA'ing marmol and handing fuji the closer job ain't necessarily the answer.

Also keep in mind that fuji's save and hold are vs pittsburgh who has scored 6 runs total and is hitting .117 as a team. The only think I see working is lose the "closer" tag and go with match ups for everyone down there until someone steps up

Is this just all a result of overuse? It seems his stuff is still decent.

I believe its the fact he cannot consistently throw strikes to save his life. Even with mediocre stuff someone who gets ahead of the hitters is going to have more success. Getting up on the hitters 0-1 makes a tremendous amount of difference in the at bat, 0-2 more so. Marmol' fairly easy to face, take, take, take, he'll pitch himself into a favorable hitters count then he'll serve one up.

Even when he was striking out a ridiculous amount of guys, I seem to recall that there was a really high LD% for balls that hitters put in play against Marmol. I don't think he can locate his fastball at all, so it gets hammered unless he's able to keep a hitter really off balance by throwing the slider for strikes.

Marmol's mechanics have gotten worse over the years. He looks like he is pushing the ball towards the plate anymore.

That as he seems overweight. Got the Nefi Perez gut and butt going.

Even though I want him DFA'ed I understand they won't. However, if he goes into a middle relief or setup role and still fails you pretty much half to. The Cubs should give him the rest of the month to see how he does.

If/when Garza and Baker both return, there could be a roster crunch that forces Marmol's DFA. So, he may have a few months to work it out which is a definite possibility given last year's turnaround.

I was thinking the same thing and would add if/when Stewart and Barney returns that Gonzalez and Valbuena are gone. Both Feldman and Villanueva move out of the pen? I highly doubt they DFA Marmol though I wouldn't be surprised.

Valbuena is here to stay. It would be Lillibridge and Gonzalez. I'd think that 2 of Feldman/Wood/Villanueva will move to the bullpen, but that's if all 7 pitchers are ever healthy and on the team at same time.

Could it be as simple as hitters now knowing that his slider is almost never a strike, so it's now easy to lay off?

He started last year exactly the same..he even had a 27.00 era after his third appearance. He had a 6.50 era mid june, and then finished with a 3.42 era and converted 19 of his last 20 save chances. Last year they put him in a set up role for awhile, and got some holds. When everyone else they tried failed, he came back ok.

If he can do that again, we can probably get something for him..not much but something. Right now you have several teams that are hoping to contend struggling with closers. Detroit even resigned valverde. If he continues his decline from the end of last year, that could be a prime target. We may be looking at a A league player, but it's something and you never what someone will do when teams get desperate.

Stop saying "fuji."

you have nothing better to worry about?

your like a crotchety old women

His name is "Fujikawa." It's easy to remember, spell, and pointlessly shaving off four letters makes you sound like a 5-year-old or Mike Quade.

Have fun championing the effort to curb people from calling him that over the next few years

Why does that matter to you? I am pretty sure you are not my mother nor my boss so please don't try to tell me what to do or what to I can call anyone. Obviously you knew exactly who I was talking about so it really shouldn't matter. Not to mention telling me to stop saying fuji is off topic. So how about we drop it and continue the Marmol watch.

His stuff looked better last night. The slider had the hard downward bite to it and a couple were exceptional with late break. I didn't count how many FB's he threw or get the velo but his location was better.
