What the hell else could it mean? For the life of me I can't imagine why people are so set against the two of those guys. There's been a dozen worse names thrown into the ring during this search and maybe only a couple better ones.

It could mean lots of things, as Banedon just pointed out.

I'd have no problem at all with Gruden, though.

Actually he didn't point out anything. He just said he doesn't think he's the right guy, which sounds to me like some sort of gut instinct knee jerk reaction to the theory that he's a defensive minded blowhard of a coach or something. The Bears are interviewing several special teams coordinators, many coaches with no significant offensive play calling or planning history and even some defensive guys. Cowher was on board with the need for a passing offense in this league long before many other coaches wanted that. He's a legitimate head coach who we know isn't going to be overwhelmed by the job, like so many previous "hot coordinator types" have shown in the past. I understand why he may not be at the top of a list, but it's inexplicable why people flat out don't want him.

Some defensive guys meaning one guy out of courtesy who has strong ties to the organization? Or did I miss one?

I think it's something like 7 OC's, 4 ST coaches, some Canadian dude, and Singletary.

David is looking to argue semantics and sidestep the topic without making much of a point.

It is very meatball-ish to think Cowher does not possess the common sense to understand it is a passing league and put together a very capable offensive staff based on him calling Super Bowl caliber defenses.

It seems to me Cowher would be the best fit out there. Like it or not this team and organization is built on defense. If we happened to model it after the pIttsburgh legacy how could we be upset.

He took over from Noll after they were mediocre for many years(1 playoff appearance in 7 years, sub .500 record for that span and 9 wins as the high win mark) He then took them to 10 playoffs in his 15 seasons, 2 superbowls, averaging 10 wins a season with starting quarterbacks named O'Donnell, Stewart, Tomczak, and Maddox(Tommy). Not to mention his offense always ranked in the top half, and 5 times they were in the top 10 with those guys. His team ranked 3rd in total offense with Kordell Stewart at QB.

Wouldn't it just suck to be basically be a Superbowl contender every year and win the division 10 of the next 15 years, that would be awful.

I think a bigger question would how would Emery even be able to lure a coach like that here...

some Canadian dude,

I'm not saying that I want him, but I think it's fair to say that Trestman is getting his interviews off his work in the NFL as a QB coach / OC, and less for his HC gig in Canada.

The only question that matters in my mind is when Cowher would be interested in interviewing and actually coming back. He recently said he doesn't want to come back for another 4 or 5 years. He also said he has been contacted by several teams and turned them all down because he isn't interested in coaching in 2013.

Unless he's lying, I'm not sure there is much point talking about him as a serious candidate. Once he agrees to interview somewhere, I'm sure his name will by flying around all over the place.

TE is not 1A. Its a distant 2nd. The Bears could usr all 5 spots on the OL before 1 TE. If I had to realistically break it down TE would be 3 after OT and OG.

Right there with you. Tight end cannot be prioritized as much as OL. There's been a new excuse every season why OL isn't prioritized and time ran out on those theories years ago.

Agreed on both.

yeah, that could be a problem. I am not sure we would spend enough or give him enough control to get him to change his mind.

Don't know why he would wait, he'll be pushing 60 in 4-5 years. Seems if he ever came back it would be soon.

Anyone surprised Billick hasn't received any mention?

There's been no conversations with any former HC's outside of the Singletary courtesy interview. Either they really are looking for a first time HC, or they've kept those interviews very quiet.

Honestly, Singletary doesn't count either given his relationship to the Bears and the "Rooney rule".

I don't like the fact that Emery is looking at only offensive guys and guys with no HC experience. If the search is this extensive right now with 11 or so, why limit it at that point?

With that said, I'd be content with McCoy, Arians, and Sullivan.
