Toub interviewed for Bears HC yesterday, per Dan Pompei and Sean Jensen.

I've heard that Toub is a great football mind. Not sure where I heard that, or if it's true, but I like to think it is.

Could be, but I'd rather not go from Lovie Smith, to one of his assistants.

New blood, thx :)

One of the internet theories out there is that all these interviews are to have a baseline to compare Toub to.

That would suck.

If Toub is the guy then my assumption is the defensive staff stays intact, and Bates would almost certainly stay around, meaning very little new blood on the offensive staff. This organization desperately needs new blood.

Agreed.

Dan Bernstein has been saying that he's heard there's 2 candidates that Emery really likes, but that he's going in to all the interviews open minded, willing to be wow'd.

Somebody tweeted last week that they had been informing candidates they were already down to 2, but I assume this is all just rumor and assumptions and Emery's is being straightforward about looking everywhere.

Anybody know who the 2 candidates Emery likes?

Packers fan blog about the Bears coaching search, complimenting Emery and comparing the search to the one that brought in McCarthy.

Good read but it starts out by saying that the rest of the league is laughing at the Bears for not interviewing Chip Kelly (wasn't going to leave Oregon anyways) and Jon Gruden (who pretty much said he wanted to stay at ESPN and no teams that we know of have contacted him)

Of course not, or it would be plastered everywhere.

Until this hire is done and one of the guys I hope it is, I will be very afraid of Emery's choices. I still fear that he picks an "underdog", hard worker type as a head coach instead of a young up-and-comer. Because that's basically what Emery is/was when he got hired as GM. He was a scout putting in several hours a day riding around the southeast, watching film and compiling info on prospects.

I worry that he'll go for a guy like DeCamillas who has been around forever, but never had a chance to be a HC. Or a guy like Sullivan who has the similar military background. All over guys that have had the "fortune" of coaching Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers or coaching under Sean Payton and Mike Shanahan, citing some type of silver spoon theory for those guys.

I also worry that the "offensive minds" they are bringing in aren't exactly from juggernauts. Arians seems like the best on paper. I am not sure why anyone would fully believe that Emery will come through on this hire. He is from the Pat's tree of coaching/FO whihc has failed miserably everywhere else. He escaped the regime in KC months before they were sent packing. He got us Marshall but also hired Tice as a OC, which was awful and botched the draft-which is supposed to be his strength. I hope for the best, and will give him every opportunity to do his job but we should all have have doubts on how this will work out.

How can you say he botched the draft after one year? What a joke. Besides its not a GMs job to evaluate the entire draft pool. He had no time to implement his scouting system or put in his own guys. Even if two years from now this draft sucked, it gets a waiver.

Order of preference out of those I'd be okay with hiring:

McCoy

Carmichael

Clements

Dennison

Arians

Bevell

If we hire anyone else I'll either be disappointed and/or in desperate need of persuasion.

Hmm, I thought Tice would have been Lovie's hire (as most coordinators are the HC's pick).

As for the draft, you've got to give McClellin more than one season, and Hardin we don't know much about due to injury. Alshon Jeffrey looks pretty good so far. It's a little harsh at this point to say he botched it, IMO. Though the lack of attention to OLine is downright maddening.

It was a bad draft, and it was on Emery. He had plenty of time to be ready for the draft and didn't do a good job. But you can't blame him for Tice. That's Lovie's call.

I'd blame Emery for Tice over the draft, though at this point I dont know whats to blame other than taking an injury prone safety.

Jeffery looked good when he wasnt hurt and it was a solid trade to get him Mclellin wasn't great, but I don't think that pick was supposed to be an impact off the bat. Evan showed some good things. Then you reach the point where the talent level is basically UDFA.

I can get Hardin criticism. And I kind of get the McClellin criticism, though you still have to give it more years to evaluate.

But even still this first draft can't be fully judged. The Bears made their picks with Angelos scouts and Angelo's rating system. Since then they've overhauled the scouting department, including adding positions. And Emery has had the past year to implement his scouting system. This draft will be much more telling to what we can expect from Emery. Running a draft with the old guys scouts and "infrastructure" is like reading a foreign language Novel that was translated through Google.

We will see soon enough. I certainly hope that some of the picks from last year were due to remnants of the old regime still in place. Because nobody can argue, some of those picks had all the hallmarks of "Angleo reaches" -- starting with the #1 guy chosen.

So, let's all hope for a clean break this year, and a much more comprehensible draft strategy.

Posted

Yeah, Jeffrey was the only good pick in the draft last year.

We got an undersized DE, an injured first time Safety and a Full/H back who used to be a TE.

This was after Emery insisted he was looking to draft immediate contributors.

However, it is early but it's not too promising.

FYI: I've heard of several candidates who wanted to interview for #Bears opening but didn't get one from GM Phil Emery.

I called about the job a few days ago and Phil hasn't gotten back to me.

How can that possibly be? Other than Chip Kelly and Lovie Smith what candidates that other teams have interviewed have not been approached and/or given interviews by the Bears?
