Red Sox Talking To Swisher, Out On LaRoche

By Luke Adams [December 3 at 10:43am CST]

Agreeing to sign Mike Napoli doesn't take the Red Sox out of the running for Nick Swisher, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, who says (via Twitter) that the Sox remain in talks with Swisher. Cody Ross and Shane Victorino also remain on Boston's radar, though the team is likely out of the running for Adam LaRoche, tweets ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

3 years $39M for Napoli

What exactly are the Red Sox trying to do?

Improve their team?

I meant what's their current strategy? I like the signing and Napoli is a good player. I was more saying with the big sell off last year and rumors that Lester and others are available I was just wondering if they are trying to put a contender out there or sell off and re-tool.

Probably trying to put a contender out there AND re-tool. Shockingly enough, teams are allowed to do that.

Their strategy is to be a baseball team.

Good grief, it's a legitimate question considering that they sold off several of their best players for parts less than 6 months ago.

Teams that try often times wind up trading away veterans during a season in which they are already out of it. But then at the end of the season the records reset so they are allowed to try and win again the next year.

It was not a legitimate question.

But there also have been reports of them making Lester, Bucholz, and some of the other guys you'd assume they'd keep around if they were looking to win this year with signing someone with Napoli.

i love that one simple 3-year deal proves a team's serious about winning; hell, if we give Michael Bourn the 7/120 he's asking for, then we'll be the super-duper-seriousest about winning (well, besides LA)

The Marlins were pretty serious about winning last season. So was Boston, and the Dodgers.

Why can't we be serious about winning?

Why can't we be serious about winning?

Because winning at the major league level at present is apparently not part of The Cubs Way

They didn't sell off a bunch of expiring contracts, they traded away Gonzalez, Beckett, and Crawford, who were all signed through at least 2014. If they wanted their contracts off the books and now will try to compete immediately, that's fine. But to even be remotely curious about what their direction is after that deal and rumors of trading away other talented players in their prime is hardly cause for a page's worth of posts mocking the idea that it'd be anything but that.

Is this going to become the next awful joke on this forum along the lines of the towel drill?

I wish it were a joke.

Yes, let's make fun of the fact that there is finally a set of guidelines as to how to find, develop, and coach players at every level of this organization.

I just don't see why people think "The Cubs Way" is something to poke fun at.

Oh boy did you miss the point. I wasn't making a joke about the book or whatever. I was and am lamenting about the apparent near term future of the major league club.

Because it's annoying. And because shitty jokes are annoying.

Just like the towel jokes were annoying when towels had nothing to do with Prior's injuries.

I understand that.

Also, they are signing 30+ year old relief pitchers because they are not trying to win.
