ABTY alluded to there being some conversation with SD involving Barney, possibly Marmol and/or other pieces for something involving Jedd Gyorko.

=P~

He seems like a good target for 3B and makes sense the Padres might look to move him due to having Headley. He hit 30 HR between AA and AAA last year and had a .921 OPS combined between the two. Looks like he takes a decent amount of walks too. He's a pretty little guy though, baseball reference has him listed at 5'10" 195lbs.

My friends in SD inform me the Pads most likely want him as their starting 2B next season.

It looks like they started him there a good bit this season part way through the season, probably once they realized Headley was turning into an MVP candidate and not a trade candidate. Has anyone heard how his transition has gone? Would he make for a good 2B? How was his defense at 3B?

Well if Barney is going the other way......

If we're looking at Padres players, one who's often glossed over but has some pretty decent road splits is Will Venable. He's 30, but he plays all OF positions, pretty well I believe and is a career .799 OPS away from PetCo, including .875 in 2012. Wouldn't do Barney straight up for him, but I'd be interested at him at the right price or as part of a larger deal.

I just don't see what the Cubs have that the Padres would really want, except maybe a Brett Jackson if they're a fan of his. Everything I've seen/heard has pointed to the Pads being fairly high on Gyorko.

Them giving Headley an extension instead of trading him off for prospects leads me to believe they are looking to make some moves to compete now and not rebuild. So I could see them having interest in a combination of Barney, Marmol, Garza and Wood for immediate help instead of maybe waiting on prospects to develop.

Man, that'd be an interesting move. He ain't coming cheap. Nor would he come on a one year deal. I'm not even sure 2 years gets it done and he's 36. He's been lights out for a while though and I think Fangraphs had an article that made me think it would continue too.

Marlin Bystro mentioned this...

Jason Grilli could be next.

Bruce Levine reports Cubs interest

Bruce Levine ‏@ESPNBruceLevine

Cubs talking to many agents about bullpen help .Former White Sox pitcher Jason Grilli on the list of relievers they like.

Either Marlin Bystro is legit or Bruce has been going to NSBB or PSD for this scoops.

Or Bruce is Marlin Bystro.

@BleacherNation: Among the outfield options the Cubs might explore, I'm hearing that Grady Sizemore's tires will be kicked. Another bounce-back candidate.

Can't argue with that one.

Eh, he hasn't done anything meaningful in the last 4 years, it seems like it's one injury after another and he's going on 31.

A-Rod is having another hip surgery and is going to miss the first half most likely. With that, the Jeter injury and just the Yankees relative old age, I wonder if they would have interest in Barney and/or is there anything they have we'd be interested in?

curt schilling thinks arod's injury is due to roids and that the yankees should try to void his contract. real excited for schilling's not-so-veiled HOF campaign where he tries to remind everyone he didn't use PEDs.

I Liked him as a player, but he becomes more and more insufferable the longer he's been out of baseball.

But add him to DeJesus and BJack and we'd have one sexy outfield.

Re: Sizemore

Grady Sizemore's agent, Joe Urbon, confirmed that his client had microfracture surgery on his right knee in September.

Oh boy. Sizemore previously had microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2010, but his right knee has given him all sorts of problems over the past couple of years. The oft-injured 30-year-old had attracted interest from multiple clubs this offseason, but it's unlikely he'll be ready to contribute until around midseason.

Theo evidently just said DeJesus is our CF next year and we're not opposed to platoons in the OF or at 3B. Also made it sound like we were closing in on a dwal for a LHRP and/or a nontendered player, according to Jesse Rogers.

I don't know why the Padres would be trying to win now given the sheer tonage of money being spent by the Dodgers and the fact that the current WS champs reside in their division, but if some combo of Barney, Marmol, Brett Jackson and Garza (among others) can bring back Jedd Gyorko and Casey Kelly, I'd be thrilled.

What do you think it would take?

The signing of Michael Bourn would make a lot more sense if Jackson were traded...

Jesse Rogers @ESPNChiCubs

Theo says not a lot of calls coming their way since they mostly have prospects (sans sori) so not the time of year for those deals

ABTY said we had meetings with the Dodgers, Rays, and Braves today. Is hearing we're a powder keg with "almost deals". Says to buckle up for the next couple of days.

Trying to figure out what all those teams would be interested in/what they have we'd be interested in

Dodgers: Garza, Marmol, Barney? Better question is who do they have that we'd be interested in? They traded almost all their prospects out in the Hanley and BOS deals. Maybe Lee?

Rays: Barney, Soriano, Marmol, not too familiar with their system but have to assume they have some good prospects

Braves: Dejesus, Soriano, Wood, Barney, Garza? Delgado/Teheran/Gilmartin/Grahm

The way I read his actual post over there, it sounded like he's hearing the entire place (as in winter meetings) is a powder keg of almost deals, not just the Cubs.
