That's freaking awesome. Good job, Front Office!

Not going to lie, I'm considering throwing this in my sig.

The bullpen is my barometer this offseason. It's not *that* hard to fill a rotation with flippable, useful guys, it's a buyer's market in CF and there's not really much out there for 3b. The bullpen is the dividing line between making a real effort in 2013 and not. This is a good start.

I would agree. If they can add Mike Adams to this bullpen then go out and maybe throw a 4 year deal on Bourn, and suddenly this team becomes a lot more interesting. I'm still not sure exactly what the plan should be at 3B.

Kyle, do you want Marmol dealt?

That's impossible to answer. I don't want him given away for nothing. It depends on what sort of value you get in return.

True. But you basically answered anyway. I doubt we're giving anyone away and I wouldn't dump Marmol for pure scraps either.

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS

fujikawa can also make $2M in performance bonuses per year on top of the $9.5M total. #cubs

1) Does the contract include a free agency clause at the end of the two years or will the Cubs still have four years of control?

2) Can we get N&G to stop whining about IFA for a while?

1) As an outright FA, not a guy thats posted, I think he has total FA rights. Kuroda was the same way, same with Fukudome. 2) I'll whine myself, if Diaz and Alvarez are considered bigtime gets and we miss on both, because they conceivably would be "core" pieces, Fujikawa isn't.

Fukudome needed a clause in his contract to grant him FA after 4 years, right? Ichiro too, I thought. Maybe that's SOP so it doesn't get mentioned, but I do think it needs to happen for guys not to be arb eligible after these contracts.

Well, the more I think about it, Cespedes had his last two years waived too, maybe it just wasn't publicized for Kuroda. Not sure why, but I don't remember anything about Fukudome's contract. Tim's likely right, that we would have arb years, unless its waived.

Unless the last CBA changed things and I didn't hear otherwise, without a clause granting FA, these players wont receive it at the conclusion of their contracts.

That said, it does seem to be standard operating procedure for japanese imports, at the least. I'd be surprised if this deal didn't contain one.

And davell, Fukudome's contract had that provision.

do we think this assures marmol of being dealt? Is he now a one batter pitcher (who he probably walks...)?

After coming off the DL batters put up a .199/.332/.301 line against him. He had a 60/29 K/BB over 44 innings.

It seems like we're going to deal Marmol, but I'd rather not. It's not as if the bullpen is overflowing with potentially useful pitchers.

I agree. But he is getting paid closer's money, so if trading him nets a useful return and frees up some money to buy another reliever or two, that would be all right.

But he's a useful bullpen piece that shouldn't be dealt just for the sake of it.
