Hoyer confirms meeting with Japanese closer Fujikawa, says #Cubs came away impressed, but wouldn't comment on timetable for negotiations.

Japanese right-hander Fujikawa is nearing a decision and am hearing the Angels are frontrunners.

They have Frieri and Madson who can fill the closer role, why would they pony up closer type money for Fujikawa too?

If this ends up being yet another IFA they were sweet on but whiff on signing...I just may cry a little.

To be fair, if he chooses the Angels and the money is close to even, it'll be because he simply preferred the West Coast and/or a shot at the WS, in which case the Cubs would have had little chance.

But I think the Cubs have the advantage if they offered him the chance to close.

I'm just tired of these not going through with the exception of Soler. This was supposed to be the Summer of George for the Cubs when it came to such things, dammit.

Are people still upset about Cespedes? Cause I'm pretty sure we'd still suck with him.

That's a very bad justification for not being upset about it.

He'd at least be a 4th core piece among the likes of Castro, Rizzo, and Samardzija.

Personally, I won't count Fujikawa as I would the rest of the IFA, because of his age. OTOH, if either Diaz or Alvarez are good, they become must gets, with no excuses.

So how long before it comes out that this report was premature and that the Cubs didn't actually sign him?

Fujikawa deal is $9.5M for two years.

If Fujikawa option does not vest, #Cubs hold $5.5M club option with $500K buyout. A total of $9.5M guaranteed.

Fujikawa deal with #Cubs: $1M signing bonus, $4M salaries in 2013 and '14, plus vesting option at $5.5M or $6M based on games finished.

Awesome. Honestly, its less money than I had thought he'd get, for some reason. The question now, is whether to keep Marmol or not? I think I'd trade him and sign another bullpen arm or two.
