“The macroeconomics of baseball are interesting right now with some of these cable deals,” general manager Jed Hoyer said last week. “It’s created some very big markets from what used to be just kind of large markets, and it’s propped up some teams that used to flood the trade market and used to flood the free-agent market. Some of those teams are now holding on to their own players.”

“It’s hard to predict exactly what we’re going to be staring at in 2015,” Hoyer said. “But what we’re looking at right now, it is a change in what the dynamic has been over the last five to seven years.

“It’s certainly an interesting time. The macroeconomics of baseball are at an interesting point.”

I want to know what the context of the conversation was that lead him to discuss the FA market in 2015.

Is one or both of the Cubs TV deals up then? Is that the year they are looking at creating some some sort of Cubs Network and/or signing a huge TV deal with a provider? Thus having major increased revenue to jump into the FA market that year?

According to Brett's article over at Bleacher Nation, 2015 is when the overall MLB cable deal kicks in and that will apparently make $25-$50 million for every team. http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/11/04/the-gm-meetings-are-coming-this-week-and-other-bullets/

I could be wrong, but I think 2014 is the final year of the current WGN/CSN TV deal, which would explain why he's bringing 2015 up.

Well, considering the fact that Ricketts owns a sizeable chunk of CSN Chicago, I can imagine that the team would still stand to make some money off of that, depending on how it's structured.

The Ricketts own, I believe, 25% of Comcast Sports Chicago, so like CR said, odds are a restructured CSN deal after 2012 would be VERY favorable for the Cubs. Hell, even if the Ricketts didn't have the ownership stake it would still work out for the Cubs just being able to negotiate with a single network.

so we should be even more angry that we aren't spending any money?

It's not a time machine deal, son.

We can't have a $120 million payroll because we might misspend it and have it act like an effective $80 million payroll for a few years.

To avoid that fate, we're going to have an $80 million payroll for a few years.

I don't care about our payroll right now, but I am going to hold them accountable for saying any money saved will roll over and can be used in future seasons. I'd love for someone to ask that type of question in the Q and A at the Cubs Convention, to try and get a fairly legit answer to how much money was saved in year 1 that goes back into payroll for the future. Plus, how we'd account for a posting fee. For the people not on board, finding this info out, knowing it's more than just lip service could go a long way.

There's no way you could possibly know if they are.

True, unless they actually let us know a number of what they saved each season for the future. Granted, even then, we'll never know if Ricketts is actually putting all profits back into the team or not. But hell, he SHOULD be allowed to make a nice profit each year, as far as I'm concerned. I think we worked it out previously that there appeared to be around 20 mill left over last year. Thats what I'd like to know will eventually get put back in at some point.
